Donna Douglas welcomed the families and guests of the students. The invoca- tion was presented by Chaplain David Covington of Central Baptist Hospital. Dorothy Douglas, anatomy instructor from Henderson State University, presented the address. Shirlene Harris, Director of BSSN, introduced the eighty-four students who had completed the freshman year of their training. Fol- lowing the capping and pinning of the female and male stu- dents respectively, Juanita Straubie closed the ceremony with the benediction. The ceremony was not only beautiful, but also held a special importance to those students involved. The receiving of pins and caps gave these men and women a great sense of accomplishment. It was proof that the first nine months of studying was worth all the effort, plus more. 104 4. Middle: Former instructor. Jane Coulter caps Tammy Bowen. IIO Fundamentals Taught Through Actual Partici pa ti on g Clues Student to Pa tien t's Sensitivity In addition to Liberal Arts courses, the level I student is introduced to basics of patient care, including physical, social, and emotional needs. Student participation is required to enlighten the student to the patient's viewpoint Basic technical proficiency is fostered by supervised practice in the nursing arts lab and the clinical environment. With successful completion of Level I, the student has the fundamental knowledge and skill to advance to Level II. ' 1 Level II: Length y, -sg., Dive1'siHed, il t 1- K ' but Specialized The sophomore rotation, the first portion of Level II, provides areas of study in Medical-Surgical nursing, religion, and pharmacology. It is during this course of study that the student leams the varied manifestations of disease entities. By utilizing the nursing process and applying learned scientific principles the BSSN student participates in the physical, spiritual, and emotional aspects of the diagnosis and treatment of short and long-term illnesses. In addition, the students, to diversify their education, rotate through a physician's office, the operating room, and various health related departments within the hospital. Each division is ten weeks in length and involves intensive study and clinical application of learned principles. The student is not confined to the hospital environment entirelyg they also participate in various community projects that extend beyond the realm of hospital nursing. xJliQW'i'f7 uni . . 5 2 ' so ., i ., :xiii-,.:' ' fs Af , 'Q W. ,yi 1 , s. hy' 'Y ,if fl Far Ich: Pediatrics' student Cheryl Woolfe finds the child care center an enjoyable place. The result of our efforts are before you now. Creating a yearbook has been a memory within itself. Words cannot express the difficulties and frustrations we have had in formulating a plan for the book and carrying through with that plan. Yet. we know that it will not be the frustrations that we will remember but the closeness we have felt for one another. We wish to thank each of you for contributing the events which have been depicted.
