On July 31, l9l5 the board voted to hold high school on the second floor of the District 5 grade school building in Harrisburg. A five acre tract of land donated by M. E. Shafto was accepted by the board on August 19, 1916. On the same date, two bids were received for constructing a new high school building. The low bid was in the amount of W3,28h.O0. On December 16, 1916, the board voted acceptance of the new building. Classes began in 1917, and it was used for high school classes until October, 1957. The first teacher, Helen C. Regan, taught during the years of 1915- l9l6. She was followed in 1916-1917 by Nettie Shively. The first regular school term was held during 1917-1918, and Mrs. Glenn Love, the former Gladys Cross, was the first graduate. In 1925 the first major improvement was made when the dormitory was built, and in 1929 the gymnasium was constructed with two apartments above the east end. This was later rebuilt into one apartment used for teachers. In the summer of 1951 a new teacherage was built east of the school, the school building was enlarged, venetion blinds put on the south side and storm windows put on the north. A new furnace, a stage, a time clock, fan- shaped backboards and curtains to help the sound effects were added in the gymnasium. A tape recorder, duplicator, and a slide projector have been left by some of the classes as rememberances to the high school. Tie rooms of the dormitory were painted and a new bench was built in the reception room in 1954. On April 17, 1956, a 8500,000 bond issue for a new building was voted upon and passed. In the summer of 1956 the new building was started just south of the old building. The cornerstone laying ceremony took place on August 25, 1957. The workmen labored very hard in order to finish the building by the time school started in the fall of 1957. The grade school and junior high sections were finished, but the high school students had to hold their classes in the old building for seven weeks. The new building contains many modern conveniences including large class rooms, gymnasium and auditorium, cafeteria, shop, home ec. room, science laboratory, and library. Twelve busses are run daily carrying students to school from all sections of the county. In the fall of 1957 the cyclorama was built for the stage and the next spring a lawn, some shrubbery, and a flag pole were added. On January 26, 1958, the new school was dedicated. A mural in the memory of Ahlean Anderson was presented to the school and is hanging in the main lobby. That summer the old high school building was converted into four apartments for teachers. The direction of the football field was changed and some leveling was also done. 1 t Durini early fall of 1958 the school grounds were regraveled and in H S fall a curbing was started around the track. , ,X , x N uk 1 xr .-Q- I -yd 1 1 1 .'
