Modern Problems Mr. Ronald VanRoeke1 Mr. Keith Stroup Freshmen and Sophomores are given World Culture 1 SL 2 during their first two years. Mrs. Bean, Mrs. Deardorff, and Mr. VanRoekel spend the year teaching students the cultures of other countries from around the world. Students learn how other nationalities of people live, what they eat, and the customs they have. ' During the Junior year in school, students take a U. S. History course which educates them in the country's history. These classes are taught by Mr. VanRoekel and Mr. Stroup. Students learn how our country handled incidents from the past, how some people reacted to certain laws and bills, and how some actions seem to be more beneficial than others. Just before the year closes, students also learn a little about the present government system in the United States. Critical thinking, marriage and dating, drugs, racial discrimination, civil defense, individual rights, and government are some of the problems that the seniors study in their Modem Problems class which is taught by Mr. Stroup. All year is spent going from one unit to another and, hopefully, the students will use what they have learned to face the problems they will meet in the world. 63
