English, S Journalism Wil X S A tgp , 4 arol Mann The English, Drama, Speech, Spanish, and Journalism classes have all taught many things to the students at Banks High. This year's English teachers are Miss Mannix, Mrs. Hall, Mrs. Cragimiles, Mrs. Mann, and Mrs. Johansen. These teachers have taught the basics and fundamentals of writing, critical reviews, forms for term papers, etc. Miss Mannix has also had the pleasure of teaching drama, a course which was again made available to the students. Through her guidance and help there were two plays presented to the student body. Also, a speech class was offered with the instructor being Mrs. Mann. Mrs. Craigmiles was able to continue her Spanish teaching to both first and second year students, and Journalism 1 and 2 was taught by Mrs. Johansen. Modern Problems Mr. Ronald VanRoeke1 Mr. Keith Stroup Freshmen and Sophomores are given World Culture 1 SL 2 during their first two years. Mrs. Bean, Mrs. Deardorff, and Mr. VanRoekel spend the year teaching students the cultures of other countries from around the world. Students learn how other nationalities of people live, what they eat, and the customs they have. ' During the Junior year in school, students take a U. S. History course which educates them in the country's history. These classes are taught by Mr. VanRoekel and Mr. Stroup. Students learn how our country handled incidents from the past, how some people reacted to certain laws and bills, and how some actions seem to be more beneficial than others. Just before the year closes, students also learn a little about the present government system in the United States. Critical thinking, marriage and dating, drugs, racial discrimination, civil defense, individual rights, and government are some of the problems that the seniors study in their Modem Problems class which is taught by Mr. Stroup. All year is spent going from one unit to another and, hopefully, the students will use what they have learned to face the problems they will meet in the world. 63
