Football '70 Banks came through their third straight season as one of the league's toughest contenders. Only losing one game all year, 9 - 8 loss to number three in state Willamina, Banks was able to compile an 8 - 1 record, good enough to leave them rated number five in the state. After beating Clatskanine 82 - 28 and stomping Riddle 40 - 0, Banks started league play with a boom by downing a strong Yamhill Carlton team 33 - 0. Next in line for the powerful Brave team was Nestucca who fell victim to a 43 - 8 slashing. Banks, now with hopes running high for state champions, had Amity come to town and then sent them home thinking about the 43 - 2 rout they just had pulled on them. A weak Sherwood team was going to be the sixth Brave victim of the season as Warren Clary went through, around, and over the Sherwood line for 178 yards and 4 touchdowns guiding Banks to an easy win, 48 - 16. The next team Banks was to play was the only team between them and the state tourney. Williamina had the same 6 - 0 record as Banks, so the winner of this game would be the Yawama League Champions. It was a good, hard fought contest but Willamina came out on top of the 9 - 8 score. The Braves next traveled to Sheridan and beat the Spartans 26 - 6. Against Dayton, Banks came up with their highest point total of the season in their 44 - 24 romp over powerful Dayton, showing they still have what it takes in their final game of the year. The Co-captains of the Braves football team this year were Mark Buntin and Larry Evers. John Wills was Most Improved, while Warren Clary received most valuable and most Inspirational. The leading scorer and ground gainer was Warren with 58 points and 611 yards, while Tim Troutman was second with 56 points and 538 yards. Troutman also had the longest run from scrimmage, a 92 yard jaunt against Clatskanine. Opposite page, far right, Coach Parrish advises quarterback Dean Marek. Far left, Tim Troutman stops Clatskanine player short while Mark Buntin comes in to assist. Mark Buntin Larry EVCIS Daryl Graham Steve Herinckx l Mike Obrist Steve Olson Art Warmanen 12
