The Declam Team took first place at the Conference Declam Contest at Decatur. Mr. Richard Albrecht—Director Superior Ratings. Twenty-three students out lor dramatics made this year one to be proud of. With the earnest help of Mr. Albrecht, Mrs. Schilling, and Mr. Matthesen, our practice teacher, we earned a total of 43 points to take the Logan Valley Conference trophy. Carma Pagels was also chosen Best Actress at the Decatur Contest. The Clocks , oral interpretation of drama, received a superior rating at Wayne. B-Club B-CLUB. The Madrgal received a superior rating at Contest. Concert Band Marching Band The Bancroft Music Department was very active under the direction of Mr. Kenneth Headlee. The big event for the year was the Music Contest at Wayne. Superior Ratings were: Girl's Glee; John Venner, Trumpet Solo; Clarinet Trio; Mary Lou Vogt, Voice Solo; Girls Trio; Madrigal; Boys Quartet; Mixed Quartet. Excellent Ratings were; Mark Carey, Trumpet Solo; Carol Meyer, Horn Solo; Marlon Vogt, Trombone Solo; Trumpet Trio; Mona Carey, Piano Solo; Chorus; Boys Glee; Band. During the year many concerts were given, including a Pops Concert which was something new for the music students. The Pep Band played for all the home Basketball and Football games and even for some of the away games. Mr. Headlee was assisted for a few weeks by a practice teacher, Mrs. Joyce Sokol. The town's people, the students and everyone enjoyed the hard work of Mr. Headlee and all of the music students over the year. Football BANCROFT BULLDOGS. FRONT ROW: Mr. Randy 01son--Asst. Rod Zwygart was the total offensive leader and the outstanding offensive player. Doug Echtenkamp was the leading tackier and the outstanding defensive player. Honorable Mention for the all conference team were: Galen Petersen, Bob Lutjen and Bob Roth. Captains were Jay Copple, Galen Petersen and Rod Zwygart. There were 25 letter-men, 14 are returning next year. Logan Valley Champs BANCROFT BULLDOGS. FRONT ROW: Randy Miller, Chuck Tietz, Doug Echtenkamp, Rod Tietz, Galen Petersen, Mr. Bob Tushla— Coach. SECOND ROW: Rick Brehmer, Rod Zwygart, Bob Roth, Rock Sorensen, Todd Simonsen, John Zwygart, Cliff Heise, Delmer Soli. The varsity was led into action by Coach Bob Tushla and Asst. Coach Randy Olson headed the B-Team. The Bancroft Bulldogs had a good season this year with a record of 15 wins against 4 losses. The team won the Rosalie Invitational Championship, took top place in the Logan Valley Tournament and were the Conference Champs with a 7-0 record. Six players lettered. They are: Rod Tietz, Galen Petersen, Doug Echtenkamp, Chuck Tietz, and Rod Zwygart. Petersen had the best field goal percentage with 50%. Doug Echtenkamp led in free throws with 74%. Rod Tietz made the most points, 311, and played the most quarters, a total of 74. Petersen had the most offensive and defensive rebounds, 89 offensive and 139 defensive. Bulldog Baseball BASEBALL TEAM. FRONT ROW: Rock Sorensen, Bob Lutjen, John Zwygart, Rick Brehmer, Randy Bray, Tim Ronnenkamp, Jeffry Bring. BACK ROW: Mr. Bob Rabe—Coach, Doug Echtenkamp, Rod Zwygart, Chuck Tietz, Bob Roth, Rod Tietz, Todd Simonsen, Jay Copple, Glen Rodick, Galen Petersen. SENIOR PLAYERS: Doug Echtenkamp, Rod Zwygart, Galen Petersen, Jay Copple, Chuch Tietz. The Baseball team was defeated by Wayne in the semi-final of the District Tournament 4-1, thus giving Bancroft a 7-4 record this year. Todd Simonsen proved to be the most consistant hitter this year and had 2 home runs. Rock Sorensen had the best pitching record 4 wins, 1 loss. Doug Echtenkamp had a 3-3 record. Track — Boy's Track season was long and hard for the boys as well as for Coach Olson but it turned out to be quite gratifying. During the various meets, four track records were broken. One squad member, Joe Bring went to the State Track meet and placed 7th in the two mile. Randy Miller was voted track team captain and most valuable player. Outstanding players voted were: Juniors—Joe Bring, Sophomores--Todd Simonsen, and Freshmen--Marlon Vogt. 26 And Girl's Girl's Track was started at Bancroft this year. Many girl's participated in the sport under the coaching of Mr. Echtenkamp. Marsha Mohl was our top girl, taking first place in the discus at the Conference meet. The school has a very promising future in girls track. The uniforms were purchased by the Bancroft Pep-Club. 27 Girl's Volleyball GIRL'S VOLLEYBALL TEAM. FRONT ROW: Jo Lynn Miller, Marsha Mohl, Lanelle Metzger, Holly Tonjes, Mona Carey, Vicki Hermelbracht, Beverly Kubic, Carina Pagels. SECOND ROW: Nancy Gerch, Judy Russman, Nancy Hermelbracht, Mary Lou Vogt, Dotty Anderson, Nancy Waite, Connie Lutjen, Mr. Bob Rabe—Coach. Bancroft has started its first girl's volleyball team. Mr. Bob Rabe was given the honorable position of coach, with 15 girls participating. The uniforms were the girl's track suits which were purchased by the Pep-club. The team won 3 matches and lost 4. They placed 4th in the Logan Valley Tournament. Connie Lutjen was the team captain and Carma Pagels was the leading scorer, setting the school record at 10 points in a row. Thfe top players were: Carma Pagels, Dotty Andersen, Connie Lutjen, Nancy Gerch, Marsha Mohl, Bev Kubic, and Lanelle Metzger. The varsity was given much support by the other players. A CTIVITIES Going Orange Is Going Great The night before Homecoming, the B-Club and Pep-Club planned a pep rally downtown and a bonfire at the park. A snake dance was led by the cheerleaders. The B-Club brought an old car which represented our opponent, Homer Unfortunately we lost our Homecoming game, 0-22. During the pep rally several of the teachers gave speeches and lent their enthusiasm in smashing Homer. The Band led by Mr. Headlee also gave their support. The Pep-Club girls were assigned to various committees to get the decorating done. The gym was decorated in the traditional Orange and Black , with the theme Going Orange is Going Great . A dance was held after the game for all students and faculty. The High School students of BHS voted Jay Copple and Connie Lutjen as the Homecoming King and Queen. Each class elected their attendants. They are: Senior attendants, Galen Petersen and Jan Sorensen. Junior attendants, Becky Schilling and Rick Brehmer. Sophomore attendants, Jeffry Bring and Kris Larsen. Freshmen attendants, Nancy Hermelbracht and Glenn Newell. The Homecoming Royalty was announced at the half-time activities. The band, under the direction of Mr. Ken Headlee, played and marched. Mr. Richard Albrecht announced the Royalty. Miss Buskirk, the Pep-club sponsor presented the attendants with their flowers. Last year's King and Queen crowned the new King and Queen. Dale Ruehling crowned Jay and Debbie Wegner crowned Connie and presented her with a dozen roses from the Pep-club. After this, the attendants and the King and Queen rode around the field in convertables while the band played. Aunt Cathie's Cat The Juniors chose Aunt Cathie's Cat an exciting mystery comedy for their class play. It was directed by Richard Albrecht. Student directors were Becky Schilling and Carma Pagels. The cast members put a lot of hard work and effort into making the play the success that it was. A matinee was given in the afternoon with performances both that evening and the following night. Many laughs and shivers kept the audience on the edge of their seats throughout the three funfilled acts. The Seniors served lunch after both evening Absolutely Murder The Senior Class Play was directed by the class sponsor, Mr. Daryle Urwiler. Mary Lou Vogt was the student director. The play was a mystery-comedy which turned out a great success. Many hours of work and sacrafice were put out by the seniors in producing their last class play. A matinee was given for the student body before the final performance so that all the unexpected mistakes could hopefully be worked out. The actors recieved many laughs through the play and sent tingles up the spines of the audience. Members of the class sold tickets around town and in the country. The junior class sold lunch after the final performance. Paris By Night the theme for the Junior-Senior Banquet and Pro: was beautifully carried out by the Junior Class. The gymnasium turned into a street in Paris, highlighted on one end by the Arc d Triomph and on the other the Eiffel Tower. A fountain just beneath the Eiffel Tower proved to be a main attraction for all. Tiny sidewalk cafes along the street completed the Parisien mood. A delicious meal was served by sophomores, Dixie Graff, Kris Larsen, Jo Lynn Miller, Bob Lutjen, John Zwygart, and Jeff Bring. The program consisted of their talents, as well as the reading of the Senior Will and Prophecy, and a talk by speaker Mr. Headlee. The Seven Sons furnished the music for the dance afterwards and proved to be a very good combo. Athletic Banquet We're the Champs was the theme for the Athletic Banquet which was held April 17. Awards were given in football and basketball, as well as Pep Club. Honorable mention was made for volleyball, boys and girls track and baseball. The highlight of the evening was the announcement of the coming year's Varsity Cheerleaders by Miss Busk irk. The Banquet was followed by a spring dance. 36 A DMINISTRA TION Administration SUPERINTENDENT MR. K.J. ECHTENKAMP Mr. Echtenkamp has taught at Bancroft for the past 17 yesrs. This year he taught Physics along with his many duties as superintendent of our school. This is Mr. Echtenkamp's last year, he plans to move to Norfolk as Business Manager and Placement Director of Northeast Nebraska Technical College. We owe many thanks to him for all his hard work and years of dedication to our school. PRINCIPAL MR. ROBERT D. TUSHLA Along with his position as principal, Mr. Tushla taught math and was the head basketball coach of Bancroft High School. He will returning next year to fill these positions at our school. His dedication and hard has helped to make our school one of which we are all proud. BOARD OF EDUCATION Our board members have been faithful workers in Bancroft. And another. Some of the girls' rooms. A boy's room. Bus Rides Canoe rides All had a steak dinner. The dance was crowded-- but entertaining! The girls served breakfast. The Seniors spent two eventful days at Lake Okaboji, Iowa. They were sponsored by Mrs. Schilling and Mr. Urwiler and his wife. During the two days the Seniors toured a fish hatchery, the Coke bottling co., and Aalf Clothing Manufactory. They went to a dance on the boat nEmpress, took canoe rides at the motel, had fun on the midway, had an airplane ride, and had lots of fun together at the hotel and on the bus. Juniors JUNIOR CLASS. The Juniors launched their 1969-70 school year with a total of twenty-five members. Soon they were spinning into orbit with the whirlwind of activities that naturally accompany the Junior year. To make sure we were kept on course, the class officers elected were: Dudley Ronnenkamp--President, Karmen Tonjes--Vice President, Rod Tietz--Secretary, Becky Schilling--Treasurer, and Dan Marr--News Reporter. Attendants were Becky Schilling and Rick Brehmer. Carma Pagels, Nancy Gerch, and Becky Schilling represented us as varsity cheerleaders during the year. Aunt Cathie's Cat was a great success as the Junior Class Play. In the spring Karmen Tonjes and Rod Tietz were named Girl and Boy Staters. Alternates were Judy Russman, and John Ortmann. Junior letterman announced at the Athletic Banquet were: Rod Tietz, Rock Sorensen, Rick Brehmer, Joe Bring, Jack Waite, Larry Lill, Cliff Heise, Dan Marr, and Randy Bray. 53 Sophomores SOPHOMORE CLASS. We gave the Freshman a welcome party, and, in return, we got a thank-you party. Leading our class through the year was President Bev Kubik assisted by Vice President Dixie Graff, and Vicki Hermelbracht as Secretary-Treasurer. Tod Simonsen was News Reporter. JoLynn Miller represented our class as a Junior Cheerleader. Our class elected Kris Larsen and Jeff Bring as our class attendents. Congratulations to these three classmates for their achievements. Seven boys ventured out for track while four girls tried their hand at it. JoLynn Miller and Bev Kubic were Letter women . Freshmen FRESHMEN CLASS. Thirty-four students ventured into BHS causing a population explosion. We elected as our leaders: Mark Pagels—President, Marlys Leifert--Vice President, Delmer Soil—Secretary-Treasurer, Marlon Vogt—News Reporter. Our class sponsor was Mr. Walter Pease. We were proud to have four boys letter in football: Glenn Newell, Brian Buchholz, Delmer Soil, and John Venner. We were also proud of three of our girls chosen as Junior Cheerleaders: Nancy Hermelbracht, Barb Beutler, and Marlys Leifert. The class chose as their Homecoming attendants, Nancy Hermelbracht and Glenn Newell. Several members of our class went out for track.
