The Haltinrorc' City College. an imposing structttre of Cothic architecture situated on a beautiful. sllllclfllls campus. towers proudly over the city' at Thirty-thircl Street and 'lhe .Xlameda. 'lillls institution. the third oldest in the 1'nitecl States. is steeped in spirit, tracli- tions. and achievements. llaving been an important influence in the success of thousands of students, the llaltimore City College is a uniclue IIIOIILIIIICHI to Ameri- can education of the past. the present. and also the future. On October 20. 1839. City College had its humble beginning. occupying a single building on Courtland Street. There. under the tutelage of one professor, stu- dents were accptaintecl with the essentials of English, Latin. Creek. and rnathernatics. Increased interest in the school was followed by increased enrollment, necessitat- ing several changes in location. In 1923. the most recent of these was the exodus which brought City College from its Howard Street location to its present site in a quiet. residential neighborhood. Believing and practicing the axiom that the future belongs to those who prepare. the aclministration and the faculty have never ceased in their attempt to bring the latest in educational trends to the Castle without sacrificing high academic standards. lixpert in the process of molding boys into well- rounded citilens. City College well reali7es the impor- tance of extra-c'urricular activities. The first such organ- ization was the Bancroft Literary Society, founded in 1876. Soon after, the Carrolltorr-Xyiglrt Debating Society was formed: and the inter-club rivalry has become one of the richest traditions in City's proud history. Today an extensive extra-curricular program, rang- ing from the Student Government and honorary organi- zations to athletic teams and hobby clubs, gives students ample preparation for the future while allowing them to rrrake their stay at City more worthwhile and enjoyable. Publications becanre a part of City' College in 1897. when a group of industrious students. under the leader- ship of the late CQ. Xy'arfield Hobbs. put the first Grzrrx llycs to press. The high standards attained by the year- book have been continually matched by the Collegian. City's highly regarded weekly newspaper.
