Diligent freshmen find thc City College library conducive to studying. Freshmen Arrive At City College Senior Roger Lipitz greets incoming Ifrcshman at orientation as- sembly. WELCOME cuss or JUNE On the morning of September 4, 1959, forty-one anxious freshmen embarked upon their first phase of City College life by taking the long trip up the Castle path. After being officially orientated, these City stu- dents, all of whom are beginning the difficult City Col- lege Course, proceeded to take a tour of the school. They soon learned that scholarship was their primary goal, but that extra-curricular activities and athletics were also important in preparing them for roles of fu- ture school leadership. Supporting City's fine athletic teams, following th-e social season, and participating in co-curricular activities, the class soon became inspired with the grand City College tradition. Cultivating The Mind New music building provides appealing contrast to American folk song The fundamentals and techniques of wire sculpture are outlined bv Prof. O'Connell. Insurirtg the welfare and proper functioning of the Baltimore City College, the school staff undertakes its numerous activities with marked success. The personnel of the health suite strives to assure the student body of continued good health while maintaining the hygienic standards set up by the Baltimore Public School System. Miss Freed, Mrs. Cohen, and Mrs. Clemens supervise the clerical work and contribute considerably to the Castle's efficiency. Mr. Robinson and the janitorial staff also do a fine job as does Mr. Hall, the school engineer, in keep- ing the Castle in perfect running order. Realizing the necessity for a cultural background among the student body. the City College Art and Music Departments offer students various programs to widen their appreciation of the fine arts. In addition to a gen- eral music course, students desiring advanced instru- mental instruction have the Music Major curriculum available, which requires participation in either the Orchestra or the Marching Band. Students possessing vocal ability are urged to take full advantage of the Glee Club, City's distinguished choral group. Art appreciation and practical skills are the goals for which the General Art Course strives. For students re- solved to make art a career, an advantageous Art Major curriculum is offered. On an extra-curricular basis, the City College Art Service Club cooperates with the school in designing and preparing posters for varied school activities. Thus, in all phases of school life, the Balti- more City College Art and Music Departments promote and encourage a broader conception of the significence of the fine arts. ...N .,,, Donald B.
