Self-Expression Following the advice of modern educators and the recent trend in high schools throughout the country, the City Colleg-e Language Department has recently ex- tended its program to offer three and four year courses to those students who desire a tnore complete knowledge of foreign tongues. By developing a foundation in gram- mar and conversation, the study of this new program provides Collegians with a reading knowledge of one of the three modern languages - German, French, or Spanish - and familiarizes the student with the customs, literature, and culture of great European nations. The history of the Roman Empire and etymology are revealed to the student of Latin along with the language itself. The excellent background provided City students by the Foreign Language Department helps to broaden their minds, create lines of thought, and enrich their lives. It is the task of the English Department to develop this capacity to the highest possible level. Stressing the fundamentals of reading, writing, and grammar, courses teach the value of precise expression. Surveys of English and American literature add var- iety to the courses and give Collegians a background in the cultural history of the English art of self-expression. For those wishing specialized training, courses are offered in journalism and public speaking. The success of the depart1nent's work is displayed by the large num- ber of alumni prominent in literary affairs, including Donald Kirkley, Leon Uris, and Edward Everett Horton. Historians Follow The Searching' questions are put to class member by Prof. Arch Colder. The epic of man and his civilization from its begin- nings in the Fertile Crescent until the present day is the subject matter presented by the Baltimore City College History Department. The Renaissance, the Reforma- tion, and the Reconstruction receive close scrutiny from the Castle's historians while the study of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman cultures enrich the Collegians' appre- ciation of ancient civilization. To complement these courses, the Baltimore City College offers curricula in geography and modern problems: the former acquaints the student with the physical forces which have helped shape world history, while the latter familiarizes him with the current problems of democratic and totalitarian powers. Through this well-rounded program, the City College History Department gives the student a broad background in the annals of mankind, a familiarity with the classic cultures of the world, and an understanding ol' the world problems of today.
