if yi 1. f 3.4. The Baltimore City College towers proudly over its spacious campus on Thirty-third Street and The Ala- meda, impressing passersby with its intricate Gothic architecture and stately appearance. Baltirnoreans who have studied their city's heritage and who have con- cerned themselves with their nation's educational system are even more impressed by City College, for they realile that the pride of this institution lies not only in its buildings and grounds but also in its distinguished achievements. The City College record, past and pre- sent, has few equals in secondary education. From its humble beginning, the school has grown to become an established landmark and an important factor in the success of thousands of students. The seed of City College tradition was planted Octo- ber 20, 1839, when a lone professor opened his unob- strusive school building on Courtland Street to teach the principles of mathematics, English, Latin, and Greek to a small group of students. Thus was founded the third oldest public high school in the United States. Growing with the rapid increase in the size of its student body, City changed its location frequently, finally moving from Howard Street to the present building, a beautiful struc- ture, well-suited to an atmosphere of study and earnest preparation for the future. Innovations in City College courses have always been developed and modernized to meet the demands of the age and the requirements of the nation. As the United States moved into the realm of world power, City College replaced classical Greek and Italian with the more fundamental modern languages. Through such improvements, City students have been able to meet a changing world with useful skills and modern attitudes and conceptions. Traditionally, extra-curricular activities at the Castle on the Hill began in l8li9. when the Bancroft Literary Association was organized. Bancroft was soon joined by the Carrollton-XVight Literary Society to afford the school an eighty-four year old debating rivalry. Num- erous athletic aggregations were also organized about this time. These teams remain a fine tradition and basic ingredient of school life at City College, Under the leadership of the late G. XVarfield Hobbs, a group of industrious students published the first Green Bag in l897. Some traditions have given way to modern inclinations, others have staunchly stood the test of tests, remaining our revered heritage. New traditions, such as the Hall of Fame, are continuously being es- tablished. Almost every interest of the modern student is compatible with City College tradition: the products of such compatibility are well-rounded citizens. Through the years, City College has attained an honored place in the hearts of those who know and love her. Loyalty, understanding, sincerity, devotion - these strong feelings swell within our hearts and cause us to stannner over our last farewell. The closing stanla of the alma mater expresses our sincere emotions: For- ever may we praise her name, and proudly boast to be the stalwart men of alma mater, dear old B.C.C.
