Athletics Develop The Body i l 'lhe proper technique of a left-handed hook shot is demonstrated by Mr, Parker. An active mind can work only in a healthy bodyg and knowing this, the Physical liducation Department provides comprehensive instruction to students in the development of strength, dexterity, and co-ordination. XVith access to the second largest indoor swimming pool in the East, spacious athletic fields, and useful pieces of apparatus, City College students are quick to take advantage of every opportunity to exercise their bodies and insure perfect physical control. The boys utilize natural competitive spirit and stamina in such sports as basketball, wrestling, lacrosse, and many others. Trained instructors referee the games, giving advice which helps every boy develop his style and ability. Stu- dents are taught to integrate physical exercise with keen understanding of sportsmanship and responsibility. Such aims are especially accented in competitive athletic con- tests, which are varied to suit the needs of every boy. Youll never get me in that water. says Mr. Novak, Y f ,- , :A V , . Education Stimulates The Mind Mr. Young's world history class is shown where the historiral events occurred on the map of Europe. Realizing that decisions of the future are based on experiences of the past, the Social Studies Department analyzes events and changes which governments and civilizations have undergone and applies the conclu- sions to present situations. Such an interpretation of history is designed to be of practical value to the stu- dent and to help him understand the cause and effect which determine the growth of nations. A course in geography balances the program and emphasizes the in- fluence of environment on the economic and cultural evolution of the various areas of the world. A course in modern world problems evaluates present happen- ings and examines our nation's vital role in world af- fairs. By supplementing its program with relative proa jects and effective comparisons, the Social Studies De- partment develops a broad perspective in its students and encourages political awareness needed in every edu- cated citizen. fi f x 5 .
