Wonders Of The Universe li? in Mr. Kaufman shows that a difficult math problem can be solved quite easily by the use of logarithms. Besides exercising the mind, mathematics controls the progress of the world of today and forms a vital part of our educational program. The City College Mathemat- ics Department is well aware of the need for trained mathematicians and offers courses in as many branches of this subject as possible. The student who takes full advantage of the Math Department will become well acquainted with algebra, plane and solid geometry, and trigonometry. The Mathematics Department strives to impress students with the uniformity of laws governing our environment. The growing importance of mathe- matics is also emphasized to imbue the student with un- derstanding the practicality and logic of this scienceg for in the future, these students will be designing missles, constructing buildings, inventing machines, and apply- ing the laws of mathematics in numerous other ways. The technique of simplifying an algebra problem is taught by Mr. Sachs to his intermediate algebra class. ,T 1,3 eff?1?E 'f' V BF auf VO ,. james Allman Head i V G.. 7 if Irvin Bachman Edward Baublis B.S., M.S. To fully comprehend an idea of any complexity, one must be well-able to think properly in his own tongue. This very basic skill is excellently cultivated by the English Department at City College, which strives to provide students engaged in all curricula with a more than adequate ability in English composition, a field in which today's high-school graduates are all too frequent- ly deficient. In conjunction with efforts in composition, students receive continuous drill in such fundamentals as grammar and punctuation. Of course, a liberal proa gram in the world's great literature and more intensive studies of certain writings are also afforded the studentg and special courses are carried on in reading, public speaking, and journalism. A more active interest in English skills is promoted by the encouragement of participation in various literary competitions, such as the annual letter-writing contest, the creative writing contest, and the National Peace Essay Contest.
