Baltimore City College - 117 Years Cf Tradition Amidst tennis courts, grassy slopes, and athletic fields, in the northern section of Baltimore, the Balti- more City College stands, a monument to liberal educa- tion. High on a hill, inspiring the thoughts of her sons to far more reaching ambitions, the Baltimore City College follows the time-tried rule that education should be the practical application of the best wisdom of the ages. This concept of educating has become the foun- dation upon which the Baltimore City College has risen from simple beginnings to great heights, from the small building in 1839 on Poppleton Street with its 62 stu- dents, to the great bulwark of liberal education it is today, for over 2000 students, towering loftily above Thirty-third Street and The Alameda. For generations Baltimore families have been send- ing their sons to the Baltimore City College knowing that they would graduate well-rounded, well-educated young men. Such traditional activities as the City-Poly Game, the 67-year-old annual Carrollton-X'Vight - Ban- croft Debate, and June WVeek activities bring back hap- py memories to many City alumni-the professional, business, and civic leaders of modern Baltimore. The feeling and force of City's liberal education and other of her traditions can be felt everywhere at the school. To feel the strength of tradition, one need only step down the dusty stairs of the tower and out onto the great, shining floors of the echoing halls, into the paneled trophy room, into the classrooms active with students, or into any one of hundreds of places about the building. Here it lives and inspires the minds and develops the abilities of City's students. This year's GREEN BAG has tried to present the story of the Baltimore City College in its ll7th year of tra- dition. It is a record of the activities of City's students in 1955-56, inspired for accomplishing great tasks by the deeds and traditions of the past. 'E CITY Forusvsiz 4- City forever!
