BEEP Program Awaken Interests Headed by Mr. jack Bateman, a brand-new program was initiated last year. Ballardls Exceptional Education Program kept many students from leaving school. Courses offered were usual in some respects for there were classes in history, biology, math and language arts. However there were other classes which were new. Among these were Film Criticism. Black Studies, New Movements, Ecology, Genetics and a-Iournalism class which wrote and printed the BEEP newspaper. BEEP permitted students to obtain credits for high school graduation at their own speed and at the same time encouraged the students to become more interested in school. Volunteers in Service to America and American Friends Service Society iii , f 'fit A r, -viz ff ,lack Bateman .Iudyjensen Sandra Whaley workers were extensively involved in BEEP. They helped students individually through counseling and tutoring. Mr. Hahn lectures in history. A student receives help from Missjensen on a biology lab. Mrs. Whaley passes out Algebra exams to her class.

juniors and Seniors, it is a two year course spcializing in EM4W Faculty enj nys a luncheon prepared by the Senior FEAST class. FEAST Provide Experience FEAST fFood Education and Service Trainingj was another new program started at Ballard High this year. Gffered to preparing students for a vocation in the restaurant business. Teresaljones, head of this program, taught members of FEAST the techniques involved in cooking and preparing lunches and buffets for teachers and other groups. Additional practical experience was given to students by Mrs. Derksen, Lunchroom Manager. Under her guidance, they worked in the school cafeteria. Business math was taught one period a day by jerry Andrews who instructed students in the operation of business machines. Leonidas Byers, of the English department, taught FEAST students English oriented toward restaurant work and helped them in learning to apply forjobs and how to write for interviews. 1 X l 1 1 Teresajones Jerry Andrews Leonidas Byers Senior officers bring their BEEP class to order.
