Department Head EnrichmentThrough Home Economi During this past year Home Economics covered a vast field. Some of the subjects included were food and nutrition, textile and clothing, money management, and family relations. A popular course continued this year was Family Finance. In this class students learned how to purchase home furnishings. They also studied the value of comparison shopping and consumers' protection. Available again was power sewing. This course offered girls the chance to learn industrial sewing. Not only does Home Economics prepare one for todayas world, but it also readies one for tomorrow's. A few of the classes offered this year were: Child Development, Foods, Clothing, and Home Management, Girls study modern techniques of sewing. Barb Winter tries her hand at cooking

-i-w-, - Languages Facilitate Understanding In our Foreign Language classes a student learned not only the language in question, but participated actively, within the community, in foreign cultural projects sponsored by the department. Student-swapping with other countries, Balalaika Concerts, Pi'r'iata Parties and film tours of the Louvre in Paris represented some of the foreign enrichments of our Continuous Progress Program, where each student had a chance of earning an A Qif he wanted onel as he progressed at his own individual rate. High- rating foreign exchange student, Goa Gestdottir, from Iceland, added an Icelandic touch to the fast-growing Norse Program last year, by tutoring a small Icelandic seminar, Swahili seemed to be next with a group of Garfield transfer students at its core. Industrial Arts Offers Opportunities Students practice acquired skills from Gas Engines Unlimited opportunities were offered in Industrial Arts this year. Programs were continued training students in the fields of machine operation and aircraft assembly, the latter being sponsored by Boeing. These programs guaranteed job placement after successful completion of the course. New equipment purchased by the department provided classes with the latest tools to work with. These tools produced a challenge for the students. Girls also entered the Industrial Arts scene. Co-ed Wood, Aircraft Assembly, and Gas Engines were offered again this year. Other classes included Metal Craft, Wood, and Technical Drawing. Mr. McGee instructs students in Co-ed Wood, Concentration is a must in Technical Drawing.
