The award to the John Hay Fellows Summer Institute was made to Mr. Van Devanter by Doctor Charles Keller, Director of the John Hay Whitney Foundation, on the recom- mendation of Mr. J. Bernard Chi- chester, Assistant Superintendent of the Seattle Public Schools. The award was made to our principal in recognition of the fact that Ballard has had more John Hay Fellows chosen from among its faculty mem- bers than any other high school in the United States. Dr. Moses Hadas, who is an out- standing Greek scholar in this coun- try. taught Greek philosophy and literature. Dr. Robert Scott, who is an accomplished lecturer, taught the history of democratic ideas. Both professors are highly skilled experts in their fields. So many things are covered in such a short time, that our principal says it will take years to rethink and as- similate. Mr. Van Devanter feels he got much out of this fellowship. one. being a strengthening of the feeling of reverence for life and the essential dignity of man. He feels that there are some things so worthwhile in life that they cannot be measured quan- titatively and that everything worth- while in human existence has not been found and felt until the first time within the last ten years, li
