The staff be- gan working in September and continued their work right through June. The first order of business was to select a theme. When this was done, the class divided into six different groups to work on the layouts of the various sections. Class and faculty pictures were taken and soon the Shingle began to take form. With determination and vigor, the art staff worked right along with the Shingle staff to make this book one of the best Ballard has ever had. Outside of their busy schedule, the staff found time for a little fun and relaxation, too. They went on a cruise in the spring, and to round out the year, a banquet was held. At this time, the staff received their Shingles containing memories of a won- derful year. Shingle Art Staff-Murray, Thorp, Williams, Advisor - Mrs. Henning, Whitlock, Stenholm. Two, three, four! The snappy, high-stepping, marching Band of Ballard High School moves onto the field during half- time at one of our football games. Once again they receive a rousing hand of applause from the fans after performing many of their complicated field maneuvers. A school without a Band would be like a carpenter without his tools, for without our Band we would have a difficult time raising school spirit iust as a carpenter without tools would have a hard time building a house. Under the baton of Mr. Perry Barth, the Band has ably repre- sented Ballard as a school and as a community at many musical As halftime begins during a typical Ballard High School football game, marching onto the field with the band can be seen the Flag Twirlers. This group of girls dressed in short black skirts, white blouses, and white boots with ear muffs and bright red flags to match, give the band that added touch while per- forming their halftime shows. Under the guidance of Mr. Perry Barth, director, they have participated in many activties including halftime shows, marching in the Santa Claus Parade, and traveling with the band to Spokane May T4 to take part in the Lilac Festival. engagements throughout the state. The annual Santa Claus Parade gives the wind players and drummers an opportunity - to gain experience in marching. Events the Band has partici- pated in during the year have been the Music Educators' Con- vention held in Seattle March 4-9, the Band Concert, April l7, a band contest in Everett, April 21, a Band Festival, including bands from other Seattle schools, the Norwegian Independence Day Celebration, May l8, and the highlight of their year, a trip to Spokane upon invitation to take part in the Lilac Festival. i.
