Ballards Vice principal A T Van Devanter believes that modern industrialization of our economy has made definite change in both the school and family life of the students ln the days of our grandparents creative and produc tive activities were carried on in the home and children worked with their parents at interesting and worthwhile prolects This helped develop wholesome personality traits and skills ln our modern industrial society many of these activi ties have been removed from the home and the father and often the mother have taken them to the office or place of business. Through activ- ities the schools are attempting to give the stu- dents some of the things that have gone out of the home. Mr. Van Devanter feels that while Some students should be in fewer activities all students should be in some activities. He be- lieves that school life expressed through extra- curricular activities prepares students for later life for in this way they learn to cooperate and to make intelligent choices for themselves. Here along with the fundamental learnings he feels that students should achieve the techniques of open mindedness. The ability to suspend iudg- ment until all the evidence is gathered is one of the necessary ingredients of tolerance which should be a characteristic of every youth gradu- ating from school today.
