BALL HI-LIGHTS The Hi-Lights, Ballis first newspaper, was initially published on November 1, 1946, for the sole purpose of bringing the news of Ball High to its students, teachers, and patrons. The title of the bi-weekly publication was selected by the student body in a Student Council contest won by the National Honor Society. The chief functions of the Hi-Lights throughout the years has been to educate the citizens of Galveston as to the work of BHS, to publish school news, to create and express school opinion, to capitalize the achievements of BHS, to act as a means of unifying the school and to express the idealism and spirit of the school. The paper has also aided in promoting the right standards of conduct, encouraged and stim- ulated worthwhile activities, prompted understanding of other schools, served as an outlet for student suggestions for the betterment of the school, developed better interschool relationships, increased school spirit, promoted cooperation between parents and school and aided the students in learning. Its tenth year, ,56-757, has been featured by its anniversary edition, published November 2, and by a special convention issue March 26 for the state Student Council meet at BHS. The 1956 Homecoming event was planned to tie in with The Hi-Lights' anniversary, and the class of '47 was honored. Journalism department students at- tended newspaper and yearbook clinics at the University of Houston and at Port Neches High.
