fjraoffzbnts' Galveston, Port and Play- ground of the Southwestf, with the distinction of having the first medical college, first training school for nurses, first telegraph, first private bank, first electric lights and first Chamber of Com- merce, along with one of the first cities in Texas to attempt to pro- vide free public schools for chil- dren of school age, means very little to us when we think of our city today with its fine public schools, medical college and won- derful playground of 27 miles of beach. It is needless to remind each of you today of your many obligations to the Island of Gal- veston in furthering not only the school system, but also your moral and spiritual obligations that are so vital to a community. When you represent your city fCalvestonl and your school fBall High Schooll, be proud and recognize them for their fine tra- ditions and many achievements for a community and school can only become what you, as an in- dividual, make them. flfmaf ef. W1.aj7-21 70 fgg C5fz10Q12f 3009 There is an old saying about not being able to see the forest for the treesg and it,s true that sometimes welre so familiar with a situation that we fail to fully ap- preciate it. Each year thousands of tour- ists flock to Galveston to enjoy the facili- ties that, as residents, are yours everyday. Soon you will be out of school and will take your places in the economic and so- cial life of Galveston. Never forget that relaxation and exercise are vital parts of well adjusted living. Galveston is a good place to live. Enjoy its resources-take full advantage of your communityis offerings. Sincerely, Vice President
