The Sorority Room
Bettina Literary Society of German Wallace
College was the original name of this sorority.
ln 1870 it was organized for the purpose of
intellectual development.
ln l896 reorganization took place and the
group was renamed the Philomathean Society.
The name Phi Lambda Sigma was taken in
i9l8, but a state charter was not obtained
until l924.
Five years later, the sorority linked itself
with Beta Sigma Omicron, a national organi-
zation, and assumed the title of Alpha Pi
chapter.
Beta Sigma Omicron was installed into the
National Panhellenic Congress in l933.

ln 1921, when a reorganization of the
Philomathean took place, one branch of the
organization was converted into Gamma Sige
ma Sorority.
Mrs. Marian Condit, then Dean of Women,
and Professor Harry L. Ridenour were largely
responsible for seeing the need of such a new
organization and bringing it into being.
The chief purpose of the society is: "Mu-
tual improvement in the powers of self-
expression."
