Football By normal standards this wasn't an especi- ally' good year for the Golden Wave, but to Coach Craig, all that was needed for a suc- cessful season was the win over Freeport. '52 also saw the introduction of the two platoon system as Baldwin racked up a 4-4 record. Led by' co-captains Bill Hambrecht and Don Combes, Baldwin overcame its first two op- ponents, Mineola and Glen Cove. Junior Chuck Gondoli, flanked by seniors Tom Murtha and Bill Downey, was the big offensive gun. ln the third game the Wavfe came up against a tough line and a lucky pass play' to lose 6-0 to Lawrence. On the following Saturday, champion Mep- ham provided the opposition. ln a close game the long runs of fabulous Bill Sandie meant the difference for Mepham. The gridders hadnit crossed the goal line in three games after Hempstead handed them their third straight defeat. Getting back on the winning side, the team downed Central. ln this game ,lunior Ed Reece came into his own as the team's passer and Senior Ray Seager played a sterling game on defense and offense. The Colden Wave suffered a relapse the next week, falling before a powerful Sewanhaka eleven. The players, however, were just get- ting the mistakes out of their system in prep- aration for the Freeport game the following week. After a week of undercover practice at Steele School, the big day arrived. As game time came around, the field was a sea of mud and it was raining. ln the first quarter Bald- win played a great defensive game but was unalmle to move too well through the mud. With two minutes to play' in the half, big line- man Ted Nelson picked up a Freeport fumble and ran sixty-five yards for a touchdown. ln the second half, Baldwin twice came within a yard of the goal line hut failed to score.
