Dear Seniors: Each one of you has come to the close of a period of time extending over twelve years of your lives in which you had the cherished opportunity of ac- quiring knowledge through study and instruction. lluring that learning process you were privileged to become acquainted with many books in the fields of history. literature and science. I assume that most of you have enjoyed many fruitful hours in our high school library. You had the advantages offered in our democratic nation, free access to books of all kinds in all these spheres of knowledge. as well as contact with teachers who taught you how to use this lvook learning wisely. Moreover. not only did you collect facts and dates and statistics. but at the same timc. let us hope. through your association with one another and your teachers. you gained an understanding of the true yalue of a sound and basic education. lfducation isa system of study and discipline that must not stop at the close of your high school career. Surely' learning does not cease upon graduation. You must continue to educate yourself. whether you are planning further formal schooling or not. Through the years up to now you have had most Mr. Thayer of the big decisions made for you. Now your suc- cess and failures are in your own hands. You must accept responsibility for yourselves and your own lives. You must trust your basic training and realize the necessity for self-discipline. Through further study you will prepare yourselves for the right kind of living. l should like to suggest that you avail yourselves of the facilities of public libraries where there is boundless material on any subject. Keep the book of knowledge open. You have completed only a few chapters in it and there are many more if you take advantage of the vast store of information at your command. Continued concentration on growth and progress in learning should contribute in a large measure to your happiness and welfare. May' I wish you success and satisfying rewards in your future endeavors. 'iran-.. Dr. Ducker BOARD GF EDUCATIO M 7' The unsung heroes of the Baldwin Public School System How many times have you seen Bored of Edu- cationu written on a studentis text book? Plenty, we'll bet. But, have you ever thought much about the real Board of Education? Few students are aware of the debt they owe to the Baldwin Board of Education. Members of the Board give time and energy toward recognizing and solving many of our problems, and are the final authority in all important matters concerning the Baldwin schools and their students. The board has only one regularly-scheduled meeting a month, but actually they meet about six nights a month in order to get their work done. Members are elected for a term of three years and receive no pay at all for their services. The regular monthly meeting is divided into two parts, the first dealing with business. Members hear and discuss reports from the superintendent of con- struction and the Treasurer. After this, the board deals with the hiring of new teachers, their salaries, and working conditions. Next on the agenda is the budget, which must be carefully and exactly planned. Appropriations must bc made to the building fund, teachers' salaries, maintenance of schools, and nu- merous other expenditures. Even then their work may not be over, for the bigger appropriations must be approved by the taxpayers. Before the Board makes certain decisions, they try to get the views of various groups - the Chamber of Commerce, Home and School Organizations, the Parent-Teach ers Associations. Kiwanis, and others. The second part of the meeting deals with any improvements or suggestions which can be made in school policy. Policy has to do with the Board's goal, which is to make the student a better citizen. The Board tries to make the public aware of its aims, as public co-operation is necessary before they can hope to achieve their goal. 1 Members of the Board are: James H. Ferns.
