BALTHI 1966 BALDWIN HIGH SCHOOL Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Only those who know the joy of living have no fear of death— only they never really die ELIAS KARPA 1923-1966 5 FOREWORD With this issue, the Balthi begins a new quarter-century of capturing the spirit and color of student life at Baldwin. Each student, as he participates in the life of the school, making friends, exploring new interests, and taking advantage of the many educational facilities offered here, forms memories which will remain with him for the rest of his life. It is our purpose to preserve these memories in a pictorial collection which will serve as a permanent record of the year’s activities. We, therefore, present the Balthi, a “sketchbook” of memories for 1966. 6 CONTENTS FACULTY 8 94 7 ACTIVITIES 122 IG- THOR PC FACULTY BOARD OF SCHOOL DIRECTORS—Standing: Edward R. To the Class of 1966 Congratulations to you, to your teachers, and to your parents. Through the efforts of this team” you are about to embark upon a new set of experiences for which you have achieved some prescribed degree of preparation. Congratulations are in order because you have been successful in arriving at a goal. Mingled with your sadness of the moment at leaving classmates whom you have come to admire and with whom you feel a sense of security, there must be pride of accomplishment. As you go your separate ways you will become more and more aware of lost opportunities that once were yours. But you are older and wiser now. You will be more and more on your own. You will become increasingly aware that you have a life to live, a contribution to make, a destiny to fulfill. There will never be a better time to start. “Happy is the man who finds wisdom.” Be happy! W. Robert Paynter Superintendent of Schools ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANTS —Dr. Harry J. Klein, Wilber C. Brandtonies. Raymond E. Baker. MR. JAMES J. WEAVER Principal of Baldwin High School To the 1966 Graduate: You are about to leave your Alma Mater to join the growing ranks of her sons and daughters who have entered the great arena of a broader life. If this life is to be faced in a positive way, it means that during the years just passed and the years of the future, it becomes a solemn duty to build wisely and well. It means facing life with all of one’s potentialities, physical reserve, intelligence, emotional stability, and spiritual strength. In Proverbs we learn, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore, get wisdom: and with all the getting, get understanding.” This understanding, this sense of direc- tion about life, will determine whether the knowledge acquired will be used constructively for mankind. You are the creators and builders of tomorrow. The present world crisis may mean sacrifice of material standards of living, but we, as citizens of our great country, have a special responsibility to so develop in personality and character that the excellent values of life achieved will be preserved for all mankind. Life’s highest accomplishment is to attain one’s best. This is my wish for each individual student. The re- sources for your development are here; now is the time; you are the one to act. James J. FOREIGN EXCHANGE Baldwin’s Foreign Exchange program provides an opportunity each year for five students to travel to Latin American countries. In return, five Latin Ameri- cans visit our school. In this way, Bald- win paves the way for inter-American peace and understanding. Baldwin has the pleasure of having two teenagers from Martinique studying here this year. Pierre Ballet and his cousin Marie Claude Gouye, although not ac- tual participants in Baldwin's Foreign Exchange program, helped a great deal in promoting understanding between in- ternational neighbors. Melody, harmony, and counterpoint, blended in perfect concord, symbolize Baldwin’s concert bands. Daily tuning and rephrasing of the scheduled melodic presentations are part of the “concerted” effort to perform twice annually in a manner befitting an organization of this calibre. Audiences will long remember evenings of musical entertainment, whose mellow tones shall reverberate endlessly through the corridors of time. 171 Top Row: Mr. Shalley, S. Wayda. V. Smith. D.
