K : wiI1 High School is more than a building to its students. It is our home away from home, where during the day we study and research, write innumerable papers and complain about life in general. But alter classes are the meetings, concerts, a11d athletic events, and we know it's 'Purple and white forever. For this reason, each succeeding graduating class takes a little bit of Baldwin with it and leaves behind some- thing of itself. In this book we have tried to capture the spirit ol Baldwin l962. Robert Paynter, Supervising Principal. 10 One of the least recognized parts of our school system is the school board. It is through their supervision that the school sys- tem is elfectively operated. Dr. VV. Robert Paynter, su- pervising principal for eleven years, graduated from the Penn- sylvania State University and the University of Pittsburgh where he received his Master of Education and Doctorate. Our thanks go to the admin- istration lor the excellent job they have done this year. THE CONTINUOUS TEST Hardly a day passes in which we don't experience that which is unwholesome, degrading, and unclean. It isn't possible to avoid these sordid and unpleasant dangers. The strong man or woman will ex- pect to travel some roads of life which are not smoothly paved. The continu- ous test is to be able to recognize the unclean, associate with it, and yet not become a part of it. You can't sidestep or stiff-arm the un- pleasant because our society is made up of many situations and events that may force you to enter the unwanted and undesirable. The continuous test is yours for all your earthly existence. To recognize and to associate sometimes with the unclean and yet not become a part of it is your constant task. The continuous test is self evaluated. Make your achievement the highest. C. PAUL CLARK Princilbal ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANTS-Standing: Raymond E. Bak- er, J. Ernest Harrison. The writing in this course is primarily analytical, expository and argumenta- tive. In the literature program the emphasis is placed on intensive rather than extensive read- ing. Now in its second year at Baldwin, A. P. Eng- lish has challenged and rewarded its partici- pants. 35-ff .4-ann? . E. Gillooly, Elizabeth B. jenkins, Co-ordinator, L. Fazio. WORLD CULTURES The new Television World Cultures Course, introduced this year at Baldwin, is an exper- iment in large-group educa- tion. During the seventh period each day, students, enrolled in this study, viewed a half-hour television program dealing with the cultures of the world. The Television World Cultures Course, like all new ideas, was a challenge to students and teachers. Pat Erfert, Howard Hodge, Zcnobia Kott. Wonder if I could switch to some- thing besides World Cultures? W. W 1 new ll A. P. HISTORY Advanced Placement History is another experimental course initiated at Baldwin this year. It emphasizes comprehension and appreciation of the ideas and concepts interwoven into the history of the United States. Group discussion and outside reading are integral parts of the program. Advanced Placement History is designed to stimulate an understanding of history in its proper prospective. J. F. Bruni, H. C. Colesberry, H. I. McCormick, E. J. Meell. 'Tor our next excursion . . J. LANGUAGE LABORATORY The Language Laboratory, installed at Bald- win last year, is a tremendous help to students and teachers. Students have achieved greater comprehension of foreign languages by hearing tapes through earphones. Facilities for imitating the tapes help students improve intonation and pronunciation. This year visual aids have been added so that students not only hear and speak the language, but also co-ordinate these senses through sight. The increased proficiency of stu- dents in foreign languages has been very notice- able. Longuoges vga, Mr. Oesterich It's not as easy as it looks. J. Trujillo, J. P. Colanero. CHEMISTRY This is an experimental course in its second year at Baldwin. The major theme of the Chemical Bond Approach, which is woven through the course, is the idea that the chem- ical and physical proper- ties of substances are the result of the manner in which its atoms bond to one another. The empha- sis is on the three types of bondsg ionic, covalent, and metallic. 23, .5 -- nl ' N ff - - z-as sr.. A C Frantz D W Kelly. Looks complicated doesvft it? V W Luraw, H. D. Becker. During our Senior year, we reach the academic and social apex of our high school career. As a class, we share for the first and last time those exclusively senior events . . . Senior Recognition Night, Senior Christmas Dance in The Peppermint Lounge, the Senior Class party, the antics of Her Majesty, Miss Jones, and finally the Prom, Class Day, and Graduation. These events will be with us always, but we must not dwell in the past for the future beckons. 32 William J. Jeslco On Saturday, October 21, 1961, Mr. William Jesko passed away. Mr. Jesko taught everyone who knew him, both in the classroom and out of it. His sub- ject was not Spanish. He instructed us in those subjects only the greatest of teachers understand, and taught in the only way these things can be taught, by example. He taught us a great deal about respect: respect for hard work and pride in doing a job, no matter how diflicult or trivial, as well as we couldg he taught us not only to tolerate, but to respect the other fellow's point of viewg he taught us in hislquiet, mild way to respect authority. He served generously and ably as the long-time sponsor of our Senior classes. In a way, he was the Senior class. For this reason, we have chosen to place his picture here, with the student body of which he was such an integral part. He made the lives of those of us who knew him and learned from him richer, and among us his passing is deeply felt. The real tragedy, however, lies in the fact that so many more might have been taught by him. The greatest loss is theirs. 33 Linda Ack Bobbi JANICE R. Bald- win launched the season on September 6, trounc- ing an out-classed Coraopolis team 27-6. The Highlanders didn't fare as well in the next game when they were thwarted 25-13 by a Mount Pleasant speed merchant, Barry Queer, who ac- counted for all of Mt. Pleasant's tallies. On the 22nd, Baldwin got back on the Winning side, beating a highly favored Bethel team. The Highlanders failed to grab a single first down in the first half, but Baldwin roared back to edge Bethel 9-6 on a T.D. by Tom Chorba and a field goal by Andy Tomko. This was the only loss of the season for Bethel. THE BIG FOUR-Mr. Hornfeck, Mr. Gillooly, Mr. Fritsch, Mr. Karpa. The next Friday, September 29, Baldwin's hope of making it two straight was again snuffed out by a 19-14 defeat at the hands of West Mifflin North. The highlight of the game was a 60 yd. dash from punt formation to paydirt by our flashy halfback, Denny Pogany. On October 6th, Baldwin nearly scored a major upset over a worried Uniontown team, who finally managed to squeak out a 7-0 win. The courageous Highlanders were a constant threat to the Raiders' goal line but were crippled by fumbles and penalties at critical moments. After being rained out Friday, October 13, the Highlanders roared in to play the unbeaten Munhall Indians. Baldwin stunned them with a 20-0 loss. junior halfback, Andy Tomko, came through with all of Baldwin's 20 points, scoring two T.D.'s, 2 extra points and a field goal. Mun- hall never even came close to the Highlander goal line. Baldwin's record now stood at 3-3. On Friday, October 20, the Highlanders walked away with an easy victory over Cannon- McMillan. The final score was Baldwin 27, Mc- Millan 6. On Senior Recognition night the Highlanders lost a heart breaker to Mt. Lebanon. At the end of the game, the scoreboard favored the Blue Devils, 34-27. Halfback Denny Pogany scored three T.D.'s and Wes Berger scored one. In the last game against YVashington, the Highlanders received the worst thrashing of the whole year. The final score was 35-14. The success of this year's wrestling team is a credit to the boys on the wrestling team, their coaches, Mr. Matthews and Mr. Di Giulio, and to Baldwin High School. The team compiled a Fine record against tough competition. One of the most important rungs in the ladder of success was the 25-19 defeat of Shaler. Shaler's defeat at the hands of Baldwin broke a thirty-two match win- ning streak. ln March, the team competed in the XVPIAL Section I Finals at Chartiers Valley against op- ponents from Mr. Lebanon, North Allegheny, Chartiers Valley, Carnegie, West Allegheny, Dor- mont, North Hills, Shaler, and New Castle. Bald- win survived the two day elimination matches, edged Mt. Lebanon to a 24423 defeat, and cap- tured the first place trophy. Three star wrestlers, Steve Elliot, Ed Stasik, and Bill Thompson won individual first place awards. Ray Niro and Bob Demare lost heartbreakers in the final seconds of two very close matches. 1962 was only the third year of varsity wres- tling competition at Baldwin High School, and already our team has brought home the WPIAL Section I Finals trophy. We are justifiably proud of our wrestling team. After school the boys were found practicing for many hours, build- ing strength, speed, and endurance. In the event of rain or cold, calisthentics and practice went on inside the gym. Hard practice paid off, as Baldwin fared well both in regular season and in invi- tational meets. Steve Stanko practices his approach shot., A successful golf season helped to highlight the spring scene. Employing skill and eifective strategy, seniors Phil Fassett and Dave Elliott, supported by a great group of underclassmen, placed consistently in the Win column. Playing Golf in one of the toughest sections, and fac- ing such worthy opponents as Mt. Leb- anon and Bethel, the season proved it- self a challenging one. Next year's team will have an excellent reputation to live up to. Top row: B. Huff, J. Stanko, S. Abbey, j. Descalzi, P. Fassett, Mr. Mazzocco, Coach. Bottom row: J. Berseth, G. Jacobs, S. Stanko, C. Varsity Cheerleaders The V a r s i t y Cheerleading Squad infused new enthusiasm and spirit into Baldwin High School this year. Their consis- tent cheering from the sidelines stimulated our teams to victories. After long hours of practice and encouraged by their new sponsor, Miss Beidler, the cheer- leaders added new and catchy cheers to their usual routine. Baldwin followers recognized the girls, led by captain Nancy Grundy, as a first-rate cheerlead- ing squad. SENIORS-Top row: J. Price, L. Cofsky, M. Mele. Bot tom row: S. Diaz, P. Fitch. Third row: N.
