1 '-f The bdtfiullfd r Uocational Jlqriculture ' Av Through the efforts of the County Superintendent, the local board and people of Foley, the Department of Vocational Agricultural Training was added to the Foley School in 1919. The local board and people of Foley raised a sum of money to which was added, by the State of Alabama, double the amount raised in Foley. The County Superintendent must make means for providing for a part of the buildings, blacksmith equipment, carpenter tools, chairs, desks, tables, and laboratory equipment. The salary of the director of the department is partly paid by the County and partly by the State no definite per cent of amount set for County or State to pay. The aim of this department is the promotion of vocational agriculture in the United States. This department promotes education along the lines of agriculture, horticulture, blacksmith and carpenter work. There are four courses given in this department. The Freshman and Sophomore Class take field crops the first year and animal husbandry the second. The Junior and Senior class take horticulture the first year and farm management the secondl' In addition to these, there is shop work which includes iron and wood work, such as bookcases, tireless cookers and many more useful and practical articles. Each pupil is required to carry a home project such as some crop or animal on which a record is kept. Prof. J. O. Avery, the first teacher, was very much liked by the students and very progressive work has been done under him. The classes of 1920 and 1921 were considerably larger than the year before. The classes of 1921 and 1922 were somewhat smaller but very active, making articles of various kinds to sell, the proceeds of which were to go for an engine. With the aid of Mr. Foley, this was accomplished and a three horse-power engine now runs as a memorial of these classes. Prof. H. 1. West came as a successor of Mr. Avery, who went into business with his brother and gave up teaching. Various farms have been visited the last year in the study of farm manage- ment and animal husbandry. Model farms are being made showing the proper methods of work, which will stand as a memorial to these classes in time to come. KARL L. STOCKE, Agriculture Editor. W i-

libs batsuma Home Economics Department A . This is the first year that Vocational Home Economics has been taught in the Baldwin County Agricultural School, and we feel that we have made such a success that people are realizing more and more its importance. The hrst semester we studied sewing, house decorating, re-finishing of furniture and arrangement of furniture in the home. The last semester we learned to cook, plan and serve meals and studied the relation of foods to health. One very important phase of our work was our good health talks. VVe weighed and measured the school children and went into the different rooms and tafked upon the subject of fresh air, clean teeth and plenty of fresh milk until we hope to find all students up to standard next year. Of course, Gladys Jewell and Dorothy Soesbe are the best biscuit makers and Mae Terrell and Ferne Cole the best seamstresses, but we are all in- terested in the work and hope to have as good a teacher next year and to make more progress when we shall be in our new rooms.
