Etbe :batsuma Senior Class Historq One lonely night as I sat thinking of the past, I soon found myself inter- ested in recalling each step onward of our class. I could see before me, the class as it steadily plodded on the road of the B. C. Aj S. First, I recalled our class as it was falteringly but safely guided by our teachers through that awful first year of High School, and then I realized that soon we would be leaving the wise guidance of these friends and facing the battles of the world as other students had done. The beginning of our career, as a class, brought me back to the first Monday in September, 1919, when we met at the Baldwin County Agricul- tural School full of happiness and ambition as most rats are. In our Freshman year, we organized our class, with Charles Hilcher as President, and Loretta Schmall, Secretary and Treasurer. Although our class had never been large enough to have its own basket ball team, never- theless some of the best athletes have come from it. The victories which these members have helped to win have given us courage and determination to strive, ever for the highest. - When we assembled the following year to begin our Sophomore year's work, we agreed to keep our same officers, but when we met the next year, as Juniors, we elected Kerney Terrell as our leader. After four months of vacation we were glad to return to school and take up our duties as dignified Seniors. All of our former classmates re- turned, and two new members joined our ranks. We kept our same officers this year as we knew they werevthe right kind to fill us with pep and de- termination. As this is the first class to publish a School Annual, we do not feel that we are boastful when we say we are proud of the class of '23, for giving to the world The Satsumaf' H But as we know, even the most pleasant roads must have an endg so our High School career, which has indeed been a pleasant road to travel, will end when we receive our diplomas. It is always hard to break the ties of love and friendship which bind us in our school days, but, feeling that we are now better prepared to take up our work in the world, we' half-sadly, half- gladly bid farewell to our Alma Mater. Even though we are leaving her protecting halls to fill our places in the world we shall ever strive to be worthy of her care by keeping always before us the motto, Knowledge is Power. . GLADYS .IOI-INSEN, Historian. wheel, Satsuma Class Poem if 1.1 fxlgjlz Was ever fairer picture given, Than this glad time of four past years, A vessel fair, oft tempest driven, Seniors, '23 to us appears. Trying storms of school oft hover, Sometimes, around each Senior's bark, When the worst exams are over, Tom Steele shows his credit mark. Tho the royal road is rocky, i And the work is hard to do, With Charles Hilcher, strong and stocky, He will put the hardest thru. Just look, here is Gladys Johnsen, The fairest of our charming class, Whose fair tresses with gold are spun, That big, blue-eyed lass. . Here, the smallest of the whole class, Always talking in the hall, She's a studious, clever, bright lass, Our prophet, Loretta Schmall. Oh, how blithely in Life's spring season Our Scotch Bobbie's borne his part, But bad luck brought rheumatism, Yet, he never loses heart. Mae Terrell, in the rosy prime Of Youth, is in our laughing throng, And where's a lass, who's more sublime Than she, who sings Life's cheery song? We give thanks for faithful labor To Ferne Cole, in time of need, Like a soldier draws his saber, As editor, she does the deed. Mhz Satsuma Kerney Terrell's august power VVorks upon the minds' of all- Bright his face, without a look sour, Pleasant smiles we all recall. With the Seniors now is abiding With friends and foes, both young and old, Fate, be kind, Jack at stake riding Make him more than worthless gold. Miss Dunn, our teacher, we adore, She has given us a plenty g Of Shakespearerand of English lore, That our heads might not be empty. Miss Stewart the girls did enlighten, To boil and stew, to bake and brew, How bread to bake and homes to brighten, To make some dainty garments, too. Mr. West the boys did instruct, How trees to prune and land to build, And how the buildings to construct, So their brains with plans are filled. Miss Case, teacher' of history, Many events, she oft does tell, Of Connecticut state story And some other places as well. Mr. Tipton, chemistry does teach, And the experiments we do, Should make us all be careful each, Explosives, handled we a few. You tho't, when I had but begun, That I was a noted poet, But now, that my poem's nearly done, That I'm not, you'll surely know it. , KARL sToCKE MPN' - A . Z5 SEAL f K'X I Uiibe Svatsuma Class Prophecq Q5 3. Last night I pondered weak and weary, trying to write a class proph- ecyg but after many unsuccessful attempts I gave it up, and retired. During the night I had a most unusual dream- I was out seeing the many strangesights in China. Soon I came to the place where Aladdin, who possessed the wonderful magic lamp, lived. Since the African magician carried it off, Aladdin would not allow any one to take the magic lamp out of the castle. He asked me if I wished to see the genie of the lamp and ask it questions. As I had never seen a genie, I replied that it would be a great pleasure to me. I rubbed the magic lamp, and as the genie appeared it said, What do you wish? Dear genie, said I, I would be very grateful to you if you would re- veal to me the future of my classmates of the B. C. A. S. To my delight, the genie said, I will do as you wish. I listened breathlessly until he had finished saying the following: Kerney Terrell, who is now President of your class, will be governor of New York. He will manage the affairs of that state as capable as he has those of the class of '23. Charles Hilcher will be a famous lawyer, known throughout the country. Karl Stokes will be a poet, whose works will be read by the masses. I-Iis name will be foremost among the great American poets of the twentieth century. U Mae Terrell will smile her way through politics and in ten years be mayor of Los Angeles. Robert Lauder will be known as one of the great scientists. Marvin Jackson is to be an inventor of many useful electrical devices and machines, in fact-a second Edison. Thomas Steele, who is now called just plain 'Tom,' will in time to come, be known as Dr. Thomas L. Steele, M. D. He will specialize in brain diseases. I TWT' I-Terne Cole will, in years to come, produce masterpieces of art which cannot be excelled. A marked change will take place in Gladys Iohnsen, for she will soon love music better than basket-ball, and will become famous as an opera singer. And you will- just then the alarm clock rang, causing me to awake with a start. I did not forget my dream, however, but finished the genie's last sentence- And I shall write the prophecy of the class of '23. . The local board and people of Foley raised a sum of money to which was added, by the State of Alabama, double the amount raised in Foley. The County Superintendent must make means for providing for a part of the buildings, blacksmith equipment, carpenter tools, chairs, desks, tables, and laboratory equipment. The salary of the director of the department is partly paid by the County and partly by the State no definite per cent of amount set for County or State to pay. The aim of this department is the promotion of vocational agriculture in the United States. This department promotes education along the lines of agriculture, horticulture, blacksmith and carpenter work. There are four courses given in this department. The Freshman and Sophomore Class take field crops the first year and animal husbandry the second. The Junior and Senior class take horticulture the first year and farm management the secondl' In addition to these, there is shop work which includes iron and wood work, such as bookcases, tireless cookers and many more useful and practical articles. Each pupil is required to carry a home project such as some crop or animal on which a record is kept. Prof. J. O. Avery, the first teacher, was very much liked by the students and very progressive work has been done under him. The classes of 1920 and 1921 were considerably larger than the year before. The classes of 1921 and 1922 were somewhat smaller but very active, making articles of various kinds to sell, the proceeds of which were to go for an engine. With the aid of Mr. Foley, this was accomplished and a three horse-power engine now runs as a memorial of these classes. Prof. H. 1. West came as a successor of Mr. Avery, who went into business with his brother and gave up teaching. Various farms have been visited the last year in the study of farm manage- ment and animal husbandry. Model farms are being made showing the proper methods of work, which will stand as a memorial to these classes in time to come. KARL L. STOCKE, Agriculture Editor. This is the first year that Vocational Home Economics has been taught in the Baldwin County Agricultural School, and we feel that we have made such a success that people are realizing more and more its importance. The hrst semester we studied sewing, house decorating, re-finishing of furniture and arrangement of furniture in the home. The last semester we learned to cook, plan and serve meals and studied the relation of foods to health. One very important phase of our work was our good health talks. VVe weighed and measured the school children and went into the different rooms and tafked upon the subject of fresh air, clean teeth and plenty of fresh milk until we hope to find all students up to standard next year. Of course, Gladys Jewell and Dorothy Soesbe are the best biscuit makers and Mae Terrell and Ferne Cole the best seamstresses, but we are all in- terested in the work and hope to have as good a teacher next year and to make more progress when we shall be in our new rooms. In this time it has spent over S100,000, Qthis does not mean in taxesl in building roads I:-ridges, etc, in South Baldwin County. lt gave 320,000.00 to the building of the Bay Minette-Foley branch of the L. 8: N. R. R. It deeded to the county every section and cross section road running through its tracts, a.s well as sites for district schools. It gave to Foley-which is founded in the middle of the hol-d- ings, a Park, sites, for its four churches and for its fraternal lodges. It founded the State Bank of Foley, built the Magnolia Hotel, and has recently installed a Light and Power Compauny, which has cost to date S45,000.00. In passing on the rates, the Chair- man of the State Board of Utilities, said The people of Foley, should feel themselves very fortunate for obtaining the service and power this plant gives them, at the rates they are paying. It has never dispossessed a seiiler for not keeping up his pay- ments. lt stands for fair play and rc Zxbility.
