Casual conversation was the mode at the Christmas Open House for the faculty, held in the olilice on the last school day before Christmas vacation. Other important faculty functions in which the casual note was em- phasized were the Faculty Club's monthly meetings, where refreshments were often served and where there was usually a spealcer from outside the BHS faculty to provide members with iniormaiion on professional lopics. Even though attendance was op- tional, l'here were many teachers present at each meeiing. Constantly striving for improvement, committees were organized to re-evaluate leaching procedures in com- position writing and oral communications, to upgrade these skills wherever possible. The department also offered students opportunity to develop hobbies in related fields including drama, speech, radio production and journalism. Stress on reading develop- ment was continued, as was the publication of MSS, a magazine designed to siimulate creative writing among students. Thorough basic instruction in reading, writing, and speaking 'Foreign languages was otiered by the FOREIGN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT. Courses were provided to suit each stuclent's needs and preterences. Three years each ot Spanish. French and Latin were ottered, and a tirst year course in German was reinstated atter a year's absence from the curriculum. These studies, which were given primarily to tultill college entance requirements, also helped students to understand and appreciate the cultures and histories ot toreign peoples.
