The Wooden build- ing was used not only for classes, but for early church services and Ladies Aid meetings. Captain Wilkes School, located alt Da.y's Corner, another island landmark, is the newest addition to the Bainbridge Island school district. Tfhe eight- room grade school was built in 1955 and named after a famous Northwest explorer, Captain Charles Wilkes. Superintendent, Mr, D, W. Buchanan ADMINISTRATION HAS Present day living has become an age of -Spewctialists requiring ia. greater amount of technical training for young people to secure employment and earn a. Living. The public schools are providing a means for you to seoure the training needed to become a successful citizen in a. democratic society and I hope that every boy and girl is taking full advantaige of that opportunity. D, W, Buchanan Superintendent Left to right, M. Majors C. Va.nn Buclklin, Secretary, Mrs. N orma. Thompson 6 HEAVY RESPONSIBILITIES Progress is not synonymous with change, Bainbridge High School has striven to enrich biasic education without flucbualtion between subject offerings of momentary inter- est. School progress is never complete, but is la procedure whereby parents, students, and faculty members' are al- ways looking toward a future goal. Neal N. Numamaamker Principal H, C. Clinton, A, L. STUDENTS KNOW HOW Through our teachers comes 'to us bhe knowledge of pioneers passed down from gener- ation to generation, They transfer to us those ideas that pioneers laboriously devised for us, making a bridge between then and now. Ouzr teachers and their teachers did not obtain their education in the same way that we do, for teaching techniques have been extremely modernized since pioneer days, In one room school houses early teachers taught .a variety of sfubjects to a handful of pupils. But in the modem educational system teachers work in large buildings, usually specializfizng in one subject. Pioneer instructors needed little ability and often knew little more than their pupils. Modern teachers, however, must spend many years in becoming qualified for a, teaching MRS, RUBY JOSLIN Comlmercialg University Of certificate Washmgtong BBA' Thus progress has been made in the field of edrulcation. West Bremerton tied with Bainbridge for the top position in the leagueg however, early in the season the Bremerton team lost to the Spartans- 8 to 7. At the end of the season the Bainbridge Review reported, Coach Tom Paski must have been pleased with the Spartan's fine record for the season as he 'paid the bill' for all the milkshakes the Bainbridge squad could down following the last victory of the season. The store, adver- tising household remedies, tobacco, patent medicines, and fruit, was owned by Dr. C. C. Killam, one of the first island doctors, and Charles Morrill, an island pioneer. The men in the picture, still holding their pool cues, have evidently just come from a game in the backroom of the establishment. Modern Winslow Way shows quite an improve- ment over the old section. Many new stores have been added and the old road is undergoing resurfacing.
