B. officers and Mr. Axelson compose our student council, which takes care of finance. student conduct. assemblies, and class and club activities. Ray l.-owrie. as President of the Student Body, further established his reputation as a leader. Not only is he a leader in scholastic and student affairs. but also in sports. Ray is a three-year letterman in football, basketball. and baseball and was elected captain of the l949 football team. He is also active in all school functions. Fred File acted as vice-president during this year. Although his responsibilities were not many. he was always ready and able to take over Rays position. Fred is a fine athlete. having won letters in football besides keeping up a good grade average. lired's winning smile and clear, frank views make him a valuable addition to the Council. Secretary this year was Laura Arno. This pert, attractive miss was elected to record the minutes of the Student Council and discharge their correspondence. Laura is class editor of this book, a line officer in Rainbow and active in all school activities. The job which requires the most time and patience is that of treasurer. Because she ful- filled these requirements so well, Oreen Selland was elected to this office. Oreen has been on the Annual Staff for two years. is the co-author of the Teen Talk which appears in the Retttetu and is a member of Torch. She has also acted in three plays and her art work has been a valuable part of school functions. 5 lrs l ll11' 11u11'l1' l11gl111'1l .lIl1lL'll1 l11'l1l lN .1 111 WUYN 111111 l11'11111 Nl1'111111'1.1l 111 .1ll lsl.1111l l wl111 l11s1 1l1c11' l11'cs. .1111l 111 .1ll 11'l111 w1'1'1'1l their c1111n11'1' lll ll1C .11'1111'1l l111'11'1 Lllll'lIlQ.: Xxlkbfltl XV.1r ll. When we think of serv- ice it immediately brings to mind that group of outstanding Island citizens who voluntarily contribute so much of themselves for the benefit of our edu- cational program. It is to them that we owe our appreciation both for direct- ing the school business and for setting such a fine example of service to the community. James F. Hodges, Harold Swendsen. H. Lawrence Clinton. T. L. Bourns and Robert Rodal have all shown by their efforts that the Island schools have one of the finest Boards of Education that they have ever known. We entered our freshman year, filled with awe and brimming with respect for the seniors. As freshmen. we sponsored our first mixer. lhe sophomores initiated us into our place as part of the High School and we attended our first formal dances. 'lihen came our sophomore yea r, and we were so proud because five our class members played on the State Championship ljzaslsetball leam. We sponsored the aptly named Goodsbuy Mixer. Bacca- laureate was never so beautifully decorated. As juniors. we sponsored the Junior Prom lVloonlit Gardens. We presented the seniors with a delicious banquet and decorated for their Commencement. At last we were the busy but exalted Seniors. 'lihis year the football team played in the Memorial Stadium for the first time, our mothers graciously gave us a Progressive Dinner, our class play was a rousing success. our Senior Ball was the first of its kind, the Senior Sneak was blessed with blisters, the Juniors honored us at the Senior Banquet, and finally, Commencement with its tears and congratulations mark- ing the end of the four happiest years of our lives.
