Captain John David Bailey, USN Captain Bailey was born in Erie, Pennsylvania. He attended Villanova University, was commissioned in March 1945 and served in USS HALSEY POWELL IDD-6862 as torpedo officer until the end of WW II. After serving in USS MUSTIN KDD-413j during Operation CROSSROADS at Bikini he was ordered to the staff of CINCPACFLT until attending CIC School at Glenview, Illinois in 1949. This was followed by a tour as operations and navigation officer in USS GURKE IDD-783j during which Captain Bailey was awarded the Bronze Star and Navy Unit Commendation. Subsequent sea duty assignments included a tour as Aide and Flag Secretary to COMDES- FLOT ONE, command of USS MARION COUNTYKLST-975j, USS KEMPER COUNTYKLST- 854j, USS STRIBLING IDD-867j, CORTRON FIVE, and Chief Staff Officer COMPHIBRON ONE. Interspersed with sea duty assignments were tours as an ASW instructor at the Fleet Sonar School, San Diego, California and Assistant U.S. Naval Attache at the American Embassy, Rabat, Morocco. Captain Bailey received post graduate training at the U.S. Naval Intelligence School. His most recent duty assignments include serving as Head Navy-Marine Section, Military Assistance Branch on the staff of CINCPAC and as Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff Plans and later Assistant Chief of Staff Intelligence and Senior U.S. Officer on the staff of Commander Allied Naval Forces, Southern Europe. Captain Bailey relieved Captain RJ. Hanks as Commander Destroyer Squadron THIRTEEN aboard the flagship in the Tonkin Gulf August 30, 1970.
