' Reactor Control Reactor Control Division is a thirty- man division with the prime responsibil- ity of safe operation, maintenance, and maintenance of records of all in- strumentation, protection, and con- trols associated with the reactor plant. Following several months of intensive study, individuals are qualified by the Commanding Officer in a reactor safe- guards board to stand reactor opera- tor and shutdown reator operator watches. These watches and main- tenance require many hours of work which go beyond normal work hours. Nuclear reactors require constant ob- servation vid instrumentation. The divi- sion mans the two watches which are maintained 24 hours a day, whether the reactor is critical or shutdown. This is done to monitor the two nuclear re- actors which make the BAINBRIDGE self-sustaining without fossil fuels. Reactor Laboratories Reactor Laboratories Division is re- sponsible for controlling propulsion plant chemistry, including both reactor and steam plant water. in addition, the engineering laboratory technicians qELT'sj maintain a careful and com- plete survey program to ensure proper radiological controls are in effect at all times, thus providing maximum crew safetv durlna all propulsion plant evolu- tions. Reactor Training The Reactor Training Division, often better known as The CQirf8c'if Drill Team , is responsible for all Engineering Department training. The division is composed of select qualified mem- bers of E, RC, RL, and M Divisions, and an Engineering Technical Librarian. To- gether, these men coordinate and di- rect the training of the engineers and are a ready source of information and answers to questions on reactor and steam plant systems and their oper- ations. The division also routinely con- ducts drills in the propulsion plant which greatly help to maintain the high state of readiness of the engineroom watchstanders. Training is an all-impor- tant endeavor, and RT division meets the challenge. -E1 L...
