C 3 V f 1 Sea Of Okhotsk How about an cort? ,lm ,C ! 'Q-n During this year's cruise, BAINBRIDGE participated in a special operation in the Sea of Okhotsk with three other Navy ships. We entered the Sea of Okhotsk through the Kuril island Chain. The Sea of Okhotsk is an International Body of Water completely surrounded by Soviet-claimed territory - on the North, Russia itself: on the West, Sakhalin island: on the East, Kamchatka Peninsula: and on the South, the Kuril Island Archipelago. The Russians think of this International Body of Water as their own private sea in their own backyard - much like we think of the Gulf of Mexico or the Great Lakes. While the ship was in the Sea of Okhotsk, the Russians sent several types of aircraft out to look at the force giving the crew the opportunity to see and photograph them. Several Russian ships also accompanied BAINBRIDGE during this operation. It was interesting to observe our commununist counter-part since they were as much interested in us as we were them. The pictures on this page show just a few of the Soviet Naval vessels. As you can plainly see, the Russian ships are heavily armed. The Russian aircraft shown here is a MAY, which is their equivalent to our P-3 ASW CAnti- Submarine Warfarep detection and location aircraft. This Russian surveillance continued throughout the majority of WESTPAC '79 - '8O. To bad we can only shoot pictures! .XX X
