'Q-n During this year's cruise, BAINBRIDGE participated in a special operation in the Sea of Okhotsk with three other Navy ships. We entered the Sea of Okhotsk through the Kuril island Chain. The Sea of Okhotsk is an International Body of Water completely surrounded by Soviet-claimed territory - on the North, Russia itself: on the West, Sakhalin island: on the East, Kamchatka Peninsula: and on the South, the Kuril Island Archipelago. The Russians think of this International Body of Water as their own private sea in their own backyard - much like we think of the Gulf of Mexico or the Great Lakes. While the ship was in the Sea of Okhotsk, the Russians sent several types of aircraft out to look at the force giving the crew the opportunity to see and photograph them. Several Russian ships also accompanied BAINBRIDGE during this operation. It was interesting to observe our commununist counter-part since they were as much interested in us as we were them. The pictures on this page show just a few of the Soviet Naval vessels. As you can plainly see, the Russian ships are heavily armed. The Russian aircraft shown here is a MAY, which is their equivalent to our P-3 ASW CAnti- Submarine Warfarep detection and location aircraft. This Russian surveillance continued throughout the majority of WESTPAC '79 - '8O. To bad we can only shoot pictures! .XX X ! Following several months of intensive study, individuals are qualified by the Commanding Officer in a reactor safe- guards board to stand reactor opera- tor and shutdown reator operator watches. These watches and main- tenance require many hours of work which go beyond normal work hours. Nuclear reactors require constant ob- servation vid instrumentation. The divi- sion mans the two watches which are maintained 24 hours a day, whether the reactor is critical or shutdown. This is done to monitor the two nuclear re- actors which make the BAINBRIDGE self-sustaining without fossil fuels. Reactor Laboratories Reactor Laboratories Division is re- sponsible for controlling propulsion plant chemistry, including both reactor and steam plant water. in addition, the engineering laboratory technicians qELT'sj maintain a careful and com- plete survey program to ensure proper radiological controls are in effect at all times, thus providing maximum crew safetv durlna all propulsion plant evolu- tions. Reactor Training The Reactor Training Division, often better known as The CQirf8c'if Drill Team , is responsible for all Engineering Department training. The division is composed of select qualified mem- bers of E, RC, RL, and M Divisions, and an Engineering Technical Librarian. To- gether, these men coordinate and di- rect the training of the engineers and are a ready source of information and answers to questions on reactor and steam plant systems and their oper- ations. The division also routinely con- ducts drills in the propulsion plant which greatly help to maintain the high state of readiness of the engineroom watchstanders. Training is an all-impor- tant endeavor, and RT division meets the challenge. -E1 L... FOR SEVEN LONG MONTHS HAVE PASSED AWAY SINCE WE LEFT FREE- DOM'S SHORE, OUR LONG- FELT WISH HAS COME AT LAST AND WE'RE HOME- WARD BOUND ONCE MORE. The Staff. . This cruisebook owes its existance to the imagination and dedication of a small group. ENS Roger Kappy Kaplan assumed the responsibilities of cruisebook advisor late in the deploymenthdetermined to make the cruisebook as professional as possible. FTM3 Don Albright held the position of Editor-in-Chief, and, despite being inexperienced, did an outstanding job. His actual involvement went much further than his title, as he found himself not only editing copy and layouts but also developing film and photographs. RM2 Randy Ataide. the only staff member from the previous cruisebook, served as layout editor. His knack for filling holes and surmounting production obstacles when work on the book lagged earned him the distinction of 'itroubleshooter for the staff. ETl Gary Nessim had the difficult job of selecting color pictures and arranging them for the color section entirely by himself. Through months of work, scattered photographs and yet-to-be-written copy began to materialize and take shape as actual pages. Long tedious hours were spent proofreading copy, checking layouts, and inspecting the near-final product. With the expert assistance of Mr. Ed Shoen, Josten's American Yearbook represen- tatlve, many ofthe staff's more difficult ideas were made possible and were a significant addition to the qualify of this book. The Photographers. . Photography for this book, a skill beyond just snapping pictures, was done by numerous members of the crew. Almost every division supplied a photog- rapher, leaving the editors with a good choice of photographs for each department. lt would be impossible to mention all the contributing photogra- phers, but special thanks are in order for IC4 Dan Fitzsimmons, who took more than his share of pictures and spent many hours training an elite few in the art of developing and printin . Honorable mention goes to ETl Nessim, ET2 Neal, IC4 Erbe, EW2 Gonzales, TM3 Albright, BMSN Balda, MM2 Tafel, STG3 Bow- man, ETMC Riplinger, and MM2 Wimmer for the vital part they played in recording events of the deployment on film. And Finally. . D Yes, .after a seven-month deployment, nothing is left but memories, memo- ries which have been recorded forever through long hours in the darkroom, at the typewriter, and at the layout table. We, the staff, hope that you will treasure this book as much as we do. Even with knowledge of the hardships which were endured, the deployment was one that will take a long time to forget. With our very small staff and a great deal of last-minute support, we d'd VUGYWOQ? To produce what we consider to be a great cruisebook. In hopes that you will enjoy sharing this with your lo ed ' and prosperous life. v ones, we wish you an eventful l R l v ' ,,,,.....- KGPPV Kapldiiu u Q ea . BUT WHAT ONLY THE sEA-GDLNG MAN HAS SEEN AND EXPERIENCED IS THE REAL DEFINITION OF A DE- RLDYMENT- A PACK OF PLAYFUL DOLPHINS, THAT FIRST COLD BEER, OR THE VOICE OF THE SEA. YES, THE SEA SPEAKS cDNsTANTLY, IN A UNIVERSAL LAN- GUAGE, AND FROM THE FIRST BRAVE MAN wHD SET OFF IN A CRUDE CRAFT TO THE 20TH CENTURY AND soo MEN ON A NUCLEAR POWERED CRUISER, IT IS A LANGUAGE ONLY A sALLDR CAN UNDERSTAND.
