BADGER is designed to locate and destroy enemy submarines. She may operate as a unit ofa hunter killer group, screen other ships or formations, patrol coastal waters, or escort military convoys. The outstanding men who make up BADGER's crew are dedicated to this mission of BADGER. ALTHOUSE assumed his duties as Executive Officer in Guam, Marianas lslands during BADCrER's second deployment. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1962 He served at sea on USS STODDARD QDD-556J, as Commanding Officer of USS EXCEL QMSO-4395, and as Aide and Flag Lieutenant for Commander U.S. SEVENTH Fleet. He has served ashore at the U.S. Naval Academy and received his Master of Science in Electrical Engineering and Ordnance Engineering from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. LC DR ALTHOUSE wears the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V, and numerous unit, service, and campaign medals. i at sfvw' 'i X 'X af Q33 Lieutenant Commander Kevin J. BURKE assumed his duties as Executive Officer when BADG ER returned from her third deployment. He graduated from Worcliester Polytechnic Institute in 1960. A year and a half later, he received his Commission after OCS training He has served on USS LLOYD THOMAS fDD-7645, USS STICKELL CDD-8885, and as Executive Officer on USS HAMMERBERG KDE-10155. He has served as Aide and Flag Lieutenant to Commander Cruiser-Destroyer Flotilla TWO, and was also assigned to the NAVY,s Strategic Plans and Policy Division in the Pentagon. White rock Beach and the night life of Olongapo City were among the favorite liberty spots for BADGER personnel. PHILIPPINES Subic Bay also offered another aspect to BADG ER. 'O ,., EVERTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT WESTPAC BUT WERE AFRAID TO ASK During the 1975 WESTPAC cruise, our propeller turned well over 20 million times in taking us almost thirty- thousand miles. About sixty percent of our time Q1 19'daysj was atsea. We visited a total of eight foreign ports, with many repeat visits to twuoiof them. For training, we fired our f1ve.1nch gun 157 times. By far the major portion of our stores, fuel, and ammunition was received at sea during 30 replenishmentus. Part of these replemshments coupled with personnel transfers to account for some 45 hover approaches, and 20 landings by helicopters on BADGER'sfl1 ht g deck.
