A Year of Waiting In the course of any year there is some degree of tragedy and victory. 1981 was a year with unbelievable events. One event that caught the nation in a whirlwind was when 52 Americans were held hostage in Iran. Never in the course of history had an embassy been seized. This was always considered neutral ground. Attempt after attempt was made to secure the release of the hostages and finally on January 18, 1981 the American Hostages were released after being held in captivity for 442 DAYS. Some other events that shaped the nation was the landslide victory for the Presidency as Ronald Reagan overwhelmingly defeated Jimmy Carter. Later on April 13 an assassination attempt was made on the life of President Ronald Reagan. It was a shock to the world. Millions sat glued to their T.V. ' s waiting for a report on his condition. Finally word came and a worried nation was put to rest. Shortly after that another assassination attempt was made on Pope John Paul II. Once again the world sat dismayed. People began to question the security of its highest officials. Questions such as, Is everything possible being done to protect them? and Is no one safe anymore? were being asked around the world. Famous singer John Lennon formerly of the Beatles was shot 7 times in the chest and killed in front of his apartment in New York City. With such favorites as Penny Lane , A Flard Day ' s Night and The Long and Winding Road his songs will stay m the hearts of his fans forever. One of the more exciting events of the year was the announcement of the engagement of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer. Prince Charles had been under speculation for years as to whom he would choose to marry and finally the world had an answer. HOSTAGES! •■?» World Today J- Student Life 3

Movies Stars, Song The Fox theatre marquee displays many choice movies during the year for those students who had the money and or transportation. The display case at the Sanborn theatres shows some of the popular mov- ies of 1981. Movies, Stars, and Song; somehow almost every part of the social life evolved around these three things. When there was nothing else to do, and excitement on campus was at an all time low there was always a movie to catch, T.V. to watch or if all else failed you could stay home and listen to the stereo. Some of the popular movies of 1981 were the Blue Lagoon, 9 to 5, The Howling, Empire Strikes Back, Any Which Way You Can, Flash Cordon, and Ordinary People. Some of the stars to see were Paul Newman, Jane Fonda, Dolly Parton and America ' s new sex symbol Brooke Shields. These people provided entertainment not only on the motion picture screen, but on the T.V. also. Brooke Shields and her Calvin Klein jean commercials were often 38 Movies, Stars Song Student Life
