Profile: Aja Lesh Aja Lesh is a relatively new professor of Azusa Pacific ' s Nursing Division. After teaching at Cali- fornia State University, Los Angeles for eight years, she came here to Azusa and has been teaching obstetrics and pediatrics for just over one year now. She received her Master ' s degree from the University of California at Los Angeles in Maternal- Child Health. In addition to her teaching Mrs. Lesh is involved in a variety of on-campus and off-cam- pus activities. She was instrumental in establishing the two nursing student groups, S.N. A. P. (Student Nurses of Azusa Pacific) and Sigma Theta Tau, a nursing honor society as well as acting as their fac- ulty advisor. Her involvements off-campus include being the project director of the High Risk Infant Follow-up program based at CSULA. Aja describes the purpose of the Infant Program as one that optimizes the development of infants who were premature and have been cared for in neona- tal intensive care units. Mrs. Lesh is also a certified nurse practioner with special focus in obstetrics and gynecology. A nurse practioner functions as a nurse with an expanded role in areas previously reserved for physicians such as performing physi- cal exams and management of common health problems. Certification generally involves one year of intensive training and working under the pre- ceptorship of a physician. APC is fortunate to have Mrs. Lesh as a part of our Nursing Division. Her varied outside interests are assets that she is able to share with her students. Nursing The Division of Nursing offers a four-year baccalaureate program, accredited by the National League for Nursing. The program enables the student to take the California state examination for R.N. licensure. The graduate is also eligible to apply for a California State Public Health Certifi- cate. Some of the objectives of the program are to provide the nursing student with a broad knowledge base in the liberal arts and sciences, and a foundaton in nursing theory, skills of problem solving, and skills of creative thinking, on which nursing process is based. The program also attempts to provide a foundation in basic nursing theory and practice on which the nursing practi- tioner can base further study in nursing, recognizing the need to do so in order to meet the demands of a continu- ally changing nursing role.
