Communica tions Provide Skills Within the three disciplines compris- ing communication arts — modern languages, English, and communica- tion — the central concern is mastery of languages as a means which we define ourselves and relate to others. All three departments share the goal of effective employment of language skills for useful purposes. The Division of Communication Arts seeks to model in its faculty the qual- ities of communication skill we teach our students. Concern for the indi- vidual, programming that reflects personal goals and interest, and mas- tery of basic language skills and prin- ciples are valued and exhibited in our faculty. Many upper division classes are small enough to provide healthy interchange among students and fac- ulty in a cooperative education ven- ture, further enhancing the skill being promoted. v3 A4 j Mitties McDonald Dixie Pieslak June Hamlow Division of Communication Arts Secretary Fran Rinard Bob Walters can ' t decide whether he likes being the Professor or the student. 78 Communication Arts Academics

Professors Teach Students How to Teach The primary goal of the Division of Education is to provide the training and experience needed to qualify students to begin full-time teaching in public or private schools. Courses are designed to help the student: 1) develop a sound philosophy of education that is consonant with cur- rent knowledge in the foundation areas of philosophy, sociology, psychology, and child development; 2) develop a comprehensive understanding of curriculum, the role of the teacher, and, methodology; 3) develop teaching skills through man y planned field experiences in schools. A second goal which is also of institutional importance is to provide in-service course work for teachers already in the field. This course work can be to complete fifth-year credential requirements, can be a part of specific in-serv- ice courses, can lead to an advanced credential, or can be part of an advanced degree program.
