9UPER8TAR9 The 1980 track and field team was a superior squad, boast- ing three national champions, five all-Amencans, and a fourth place National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics finish. Keeping the records of no losing seasons alive, the Cougers got off to a winning year early with wins over Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Bakersfield, and the University of Nevada Las Vegas, Cal State Los Angeles provided the only loss as the team later trounced Claremont Mudd tor a 4-1 season The team defended their 1979 California Christian College Athletic Conference Championship with an impressive 206 points also as NAIA District III Champs with 1 73. The follow- ing new records were posted High Jump 7 ' 0 Gary Wise Discus: 162 ' 4 Ron Ponciano Hammer: 189 ' 9 Doug Barnett Javelin: 245 ' 5 Mike Barnett Shot Put: 53 ' 5 Doug Barnett 110 Meter H gh Hurdles 13,95 John Roberts 5,000 Meter Run 14:234 Greg Lovercamp 10,000 Mete r Run: 29 46 1 Sammy Maritim 2 Mile Run: 9 13 7 Greg Lovercamp Wise and Maritim repeated as NAIA national champions, Gary in the Decathlon and Sammy in the 5,000, Mike Barnett also joined the national champions, winning the lavelin Doug Barnett and Ron Ponciano placed second and sixth in the national meet to also |oin all-American status, the second year for Doug Coaches Marvin Mardock and Terry Franson were extremely pleased with the season, Mardock especially since he would be turning the head coaching responsibilities to Franson for the following year, Dr, Mardock wrapped up his coaching career by being named District III Coach of the Year, Area I Coach of the Year, and National Coach of the Year.
