1 979 COUGAR HARRIER9 Azusa Pacific distance teams have been such a dominant force in NAIA District III track and cross country circles that fans have come to expect excellence (Out of the last five seasons the AP Harriers have won three district championships and have received the runner-up trophy once) This was to be runner-up year. Minus some all-Americans who were with the 1 979 team and would later rejoin the distance squad for the 1 980 track season, the team hung in there for a very successful sea- son. Led by Missouri junior, Greg Lover- camp, the team had little trouble with West- mont, Biola, and Los Angeles Baptist to earn the California Christian College Athletic Conference runner-up trophy behind Point Loma. District III competition was a replay of the conference with AP edging out a stub- born California Lutheran Club for another runner-up place. CROSS COUNTRY HONORS Greg Lovercamp, junior. Sedaha. C0UGAR9 PLEASANTLY SURPRISED Coach Clifford Hamlow best described the 1 980 Cougar basketball season as pleasantly surprising, No one expected the team to acquire a record of 25-10, but with the help of seniors Gary Johnson, Jeff Golden, Steve Barnes, John McDonough, and junior, Larry Sheldon, they did reach their goal After advancing to the NAIA District III playoffs they dropped their game 83-81 to Point Loma They proceeded to play in the NCCT regional final and lost it, also to Point Loma There was a season record set for field goals at 520, with Jeff Golden at 544, Larry Sheldon at 543, Gary Johnson at 540, t lil e Anderson at 524, and Steve Barnes at ,492, Coach Hamlow was chosen as District III coach of the year, with an impressive record of 483-297 in 26 seasons . ■-- ' ' ' A . j tt nJH B WKK r H W .
