We lost the game, but we won the Homecoming, for this year's was the greatest in AHS history. THOSE WERE THE DAYS-with surprises and action at the noon competitions,-at the rally with the presentation,-of the Homecoming Court and visiting alumni, vand at the game with its exciting half-time. With the Aztec Band and Little Tec Drill Team forming a heart to enhance the escort of the princesses by their fathers, after their arrival in their cars from the l930's, excitement ran high as last year's queen, Mary Ann Romano, arrived by helicopter and was escorted by ASB President John Andrews. The climax of the Coronation came with the crowning of Mary Helen Valenzuela as 1972-73 Queen and the simultaneous release of hundreds of helium-filled balloons to drift off into the sky. Karen Rabb was general chairman for the Homecoming activities. Traditionally the juniors stage many fund-raising events to help with the costs of the prom to enable a larger number of students to attend. Early in October the prom committee was selected, and that group set the date-May 18-and chose the place-El Adobe de Capistrano-and then set about to raise money for the event. The class sponsored various activities throughout the year such as bottle drives, car Washes, concessions at games, a mistletoe sale, carnation sale etc. ln the excitement of raising money, members of the class became more involved in their class and helped to cement friendships that had begun in their freshman and sophomore years. This class loyalty helped the juniors in many class competitions, and points the way toward a successful final year at Azusa next year as seniors. Mr. Larry Winzenread and Mrs. Carolyn St. Claire acted as sponsors for the junior class. , , E, 2 A X ,,.. I fa M I if '11, f -if Q , 4 .. f ' 'J f 4, , f s bv fy? It makes the coach realize that the value of athletics can't be totally in winning but involvement. Each athlete who participated on this year's squad received many rewards that can't be measured either in the lea ue standings or by the community. The fgreatest rewarg of participation is the self-satisfaction o knowing that not everything we do has to have a reward but that total imao vement in belonging to a group has a means to an en . t I have never enjoyed coaching more in my fourteen years than working with this year s football sqluad. These men will not understand the true meaning of t eir efforts for many years to come, but some da in their later life they wil look back and realize that life is like a football gameg it has its ups and downs, goods and bads, and its rewards and failures. No course in school can ever be that fruitful. ITIAYIY lTlll.6S IIOI2 ahs The 1972 Cross Country Team was a young team with little distance-running experience. The Aztec Harriers were a dedicated group as witnessed by many onlookers as they ran to the canyon every Monday morning. Mike Ayon was our top, varsity runner. He was defeated only once in dual-meet competition, placed in both the MSAC and Azusa Invitationals, and the Sierra League Finals. Backing Mike in the five-man scoring in varsity dual meets were Mark Gomm, Beaver Holcomb, Dennis Calkins, and Steve Archibald. There were several that supported the top five which included JV and Soph-Frosh. The Soph-Frosh squad was led by the duo of Gilbert Ayon and Eppie Melgoza. We ended the season with seven on the squad. We will be needing about double that number next year, for a competitive squad. I would like to thank the squad for a good group effort during the season. The invasion of the female set made their presence known this year. The threesome were Margaret Guille, Darcel Holcomb, and Ruth Kleinsasser. l am looking forward to working with a great team next year-see you then. Poor shooting led to downfall of the Aztecs during the league as the team shot only 38 per cent from the floor and 64 per cent from the foul line. This year's squad was composed of seniors Ron McNary lcapt. and MVPJ, Jim Atkinson, Matt Murray, Gary Gunderson, Tony Santos and juniors Mike Ayers, Dave Booze, Jeff Chandler, Mike Jantz, Sukie Melgoza and Jeff Snyder. 4 bf-MM-:...,,,,wm V ' Www fs.. Disappointing in that they lost a few players to sickness or injury, and lost another player by dismissal. This made it very tough on the coach, especially when, at one time, he hadn't enough players to have a beneficial practice. Highlighting the team were the outstanding individual efforts of sophomore center Jim Littlefield, and juniors Larry White and Vern Eppard. In spite of their not-so-winning season the j.V. players did gain experience which may prove valuable in years to come. Their league record terminated at a not-so-impressive 4 wins and 8 loses. This year's unit played quite inconsistently as it was the type of team that could beat the league-leaders and then turn around and drop one to a last-place finisher. However, all in all, the season proved to be a total learning experience to the entire roster. ff' ,p-fi Q. ..f s 1 ,D-4 Q i is .Q ggi' K 5 Q :XP t Exit i S f4?:,f 1t . . i f W f , ,, , Qi Ti -2 'K B unification key to aztec sophomone team play SOPHOMORE BASKETBALL TEAM: James Carpenter, Rick Barnes, joe Curiel, Rusty Flower, R.E. Basketball, in general, is a game of quick reactions and a knowledge of the fundamentals. This season's sophomore team gained a great amount of knowledge of the basics of basketball. As brought out by their coach at the annual awards assembly, the most important part of this year's team was its ability to function as a team, or the ability to sacrifice oneself for the good of the team. This will prove valuable in forming an over-all winning attitude next year. Special standouts of the sophomore team were Jim Carpenter, whose floor- leading talents proved very valuable. Also, R.E. Smith and Rusty Flower contributed greatly to the Aztec cause, as they continually demonstrated tremendous willingness to win. bf 'L' 2. fha ,zz 'ilk w. i ,Q 4 l:l2OSl'l RESERVE EOlTlDlE11E VICIORIOUS ROSH RESERVE BASKETBALL TEAM: Kneeling, jim Villerreal, Terry Adkins, Randy Keith, llfred Martinez, Standing, Bill Patarra, jimmy Benitez, Miki' Pocpke, David Nelson, Coach, Mark ll1uster,Petc- Ant-iro, Mike Six, .lim Hicks, Robert Lopez. We won only three matches by team score this year, but individually many boys had very good seasons. Fred Franco had lost only three times going into league, and Pat Presti came on at the end of the year. The two boys who had 'the best season this year were Ron Steffin and Tim Dacumos. Ron lost only five matches this year and was defeated only once in league duel matches. This enabled him to go on to C.l.F. prelims where he did a fine job. Tim Dacumos wrestled heavy-weight and was defeated only twice in league. He went on to finish fourth in the league tournament and did a fine job in the C.l.F. prelims. This is the last Sierra League season that our wrestlers will participate in and I want to compliment them for the fine job they did. Eddie Gonzales, last year's most valuable player in the Sierra League, continued to play excellent tennis both in tournament play and in high school competition. David Wallace, another returning letterman, had also proven himself to be a real asset to the team. Two other returning lettermen were David LeVan and David Durdines who through considerable determination had shown tremendous improvement and were consistent winners throughout the 1973 season. Rounding out the 1973 team were the determined doubles teams of Paul Verburg and Dale Jager, playing first doubles, and Robbie Vanderloop and Paul Ludvigsen playing second doubles. Tennis is a sport that requires skill, co-ordination, and considerable dedication and while the 1973 team may not have had so successful a season as the 1972 team, it did hold to he a rewarding and enjoyable year. -If Wal?
