BASKETBALL le received the second olace trophy at the 'Tieen Valley Tourna ment in Axtell Jan. 25,24 In 25. le were Runner's Up at Class D District B. B. Tournament held at Holdrege on Feb. 26,2L 28 and larch 1. Kelvin Horeley was chosen honorary captain af one of Axtell's best basketball team. VOLLEY BALL lhie was the first year for volley ball at A H.S. and we ce1e- brated by winning first in the 'Tween Valley Tournament held at Republican City Feb. 24 b 25. Dyllis, Shirley and Betty were honorary captains at the tournament and also hlgh point servers for the season. In 1946-147 Axtell had its most successful year 1n muslc' Groupe and solos F8C6iV1hg superlors at the 'Tween Valley Fest1val held 1h Wilcox March 26 were the following: Duane Nelson, Robert Wen- dell, Harriette Blooms Duet, Triple Tr1o, Brass Quartette,Cornet Duet, G1rl's Glee Club, Mlxed Chorus and Band. The D1StF1Ct Contest held at Holdrege on Apr1l 18 and 19 was something different and 8XCit1Hg Axtell rece1ved superiors in Band and Triple Trio thus endlng a very eventful year 1U music, DRAMATICS A very interestlng year was spent on dramatlcs Many of the high school students presented readings or part1cipated in the one act play at the local contest The wlnners, Shirley Arnold, Joan An- derson and Marilyn Carlson, represented A H S at the 'Tween Val ley contest 1h Huntley on March 18 Shlrley also rated a superi al at Commencment Exerclsea VALEDICTORIAN--DYLIIS BENSON Received State Teacher's College Scholorshlp, Scholastic Aedal and sub T1 L1OH award to Reader's Digest SALUTATORIAN-.-HARRIFTTE BLOOM Received Nebraska Churcr Sclcol cholorsh p, Scholast1c Medal and Music Medal ' the I M SIC . . 0 . Class Historg In the fall of 1935 we took off from the Axtell Grade School landing fleld mth a six passenger fzrst grade plane M188 Taylor, now Mrs. Vlncent Abrahamson, was the pllot and Myron Madsen, Eleanor May, Hurley Arnold, Raymond Sanders, Darrel Murphy and Harrlet Bloom the passengers Durlng the next five years our plane made several lntermedlate stops p1ckJ.ng up and dlscharglng passengers na.rnely Allen Applegarth, June Ylmmerman, Joa.nne Kruger, Robert Anderson, Allen Schlelter. We also plcked up Nova Jackson who stayed mth us and Eleanor May, Sharley Ar- nold, Raymond Sanders and Myron Madsen parchuted out It was durnng th1s perlod that our plane changed fllght headquarters from the old to a new school bullding. The sixth and seventh years our plane landed and admitted Ben Nd,- son, Paullne Grams, Emma June Fr1skopp and Melvln Horsley The sprlng of 19143, nth Merton Golngs as pllot, we were promoted to the new h1gh school plane nth the passenger 11st as follows Mel 1 n Horsley, Rlchard Anderbery, Emma June Frlskopp, Tomnnf Cavenaugh, Ben Nelson, Ruth Peterson, Harrlette Bloom, Paullne Grams, a.nd Nova Jackson Three months later we flew up lnto hlgh school The pllot of the Freshman and Sophomore plane was Betty Jean Nelson, Co-pllob--Knowlen Drlcson whale Harrlette Bloom kept records and pald bills Miss Sm. der, now Mrs Rafferty, was ch1ef mechanlc Two new passengers Dyllls Benson a.nd Dorothy Bourne were admltted on our plane but Tonmw Caven- augh changed to the Mlnden shlp After a short vacatlon we began ouz sophomore flight 1n a n1ne pass- enger plane Dorothy Bourne was our pllot and Harrlette Bloom Co-p11 t Dyllls Benson kept our records and slgned the checks whrle our ch1ef mechanlc was Mrs Carlson Three of our members I-Iarriette Blaom, Ben Nelson and Dorothy Bourne took part ln the Juno or Class play Black Derby We flnlshed that year mth a class party whlch proved quite e entful. ln the fall of l9h5 we began our th1rd fllght 1n a ten passenger plane wth Mrs Lalam as Chlef mechanlc, Dyllls Benson as the pnlot and Rlchard Anderbery, Co-pllot Harrlette Bloom kept records footed the balls. One of our passengers, Dorothv Bourne was absent upon the take-Off but we had galned Nlta Jean Berggren as a new member. Thls route was much harder to follow than the other two, but we stlll took a pronlnent part Jn th varlous act1v1t1es Outstandmg 1nc1 dents of thls tr1p were the Jun1or Class play, Arron S11Ck from Punkln Creek and the Junlor Senlor banquet mth Gypsy the theme. Three short months a.nd then v:1th Mr Jells as chlef mechanic, Rlch- ard Anderbery as pllot and Ben Nelson as Co-pllot we took off in the fall of 19116 1n our nlne passenger Senlor plane on our fourth f11ght enroute to the Land of Graduat1on Melvln Borsley kept the records and handled the cash on thas hazardous tr1p Ruth Peterson did not 3o1n us We were actlve :Ln Athletlcs, Pep Club, Dramatlcs and Muslm The outstandlng features of our Senlor year were the Junlor Senlor Banquet, Sneak Day, Senlor Class play, Me and LW Shadow , Senior par- tles, publlshlng the annual, Baccalaureate, a.nd Commencment.
