Boyis and Girl's State Janet Kleinkauf Take about 550 outgoing and active 17-year- old girls from all over California, leave them at Squaw Valley for a week during summer, and call it Girls' State. While at Squaw we played political games, listened to State gov- ernment speakers during dinner, learned how to ice skate, and shared our ideas about every topic under the sun Cmany classes were held outdoorsj. The discussions really opened my eyes to the great variety of life styles and ed- ucational systems in California. Girls' State is sponsored by the American Legion Aux- iliary. The counselors, a congenial old lot, treated us kindly and gave us a good ol' fAmer- icanj chicken dinner on July 4. Bruce Channing Last summer I was privileged to be Awalt's representative to the American Legion's Cal- ifornia Boys' State. For the first time ever the session was held at the new Cal. Expo Fairgrounds in Sacramento. There were some 800 or more representatives like myself who had come from all over California to learn more about our state government. Probably the most rewarding part of the whole week was the friendships I made while I was there, and learning about what it was like in other schools all over the state. I'm very thankful to the American Legion and Awalt High School for giving me this opportunity and I urge anyone who gets the chance to go, to take advantage of it.
