Youth for Understanding Awalt's YFU exchange student for 1971-72 was Ake Petersen from Sweden. Ake made it easy for the Awalt students by substituting for his difficult Swedish name, that simple American name Bill. He lived with the Carpenter family and attended Awalt for the first se- mester. Bill took classes in Public Speaking, Algebra ll, American Government, US History, and Physio- logy. He was also a member of the Varsity Football Team. For his second semester, Bill switched families and at- tended Buscher High School. He hoped that by mak- ing the switch, he would gain a broader understanding of the American school system and meet a wider vari- ety ofAmerican students. 1 at-at .ff - -f- . . '.. .I ..r . Ake Pettersen Awalt Foreign Exchange Students Connie Ozawa American Field Service A year abroad as an American Field Service exchange student can be very intense. It is twelve months of challenges, frustrations, re- wards, depression, excitement, and, above allegrowth. Being an AFS'er means being a part of a native family, following a new life- style, and learning about the ideas and attitudes of another na- tion. It means seeing your own country from the outside, hearing what the rest of the world hears about its policies, and judging it perhaps a bit more objectively. It means growing up more inde- pendent, discovering and rediscovering yourself. I spent 1971 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The school l at- tended was private and non-co-ed, complete with headmistriss and uniforms-very English. There were numerous differences in the customs and habits of the Aussies and in the land itself, some instantly noticeable, others quite subtle. But in that country, seven thousand miles across the Pacific, I learned what I believe to be the essence of the AFS program. It is that beneath all the superfi- cial dissimilarities between people of different countries, people are all very much alike. All we need is understanding love and compassion are universal. The friendships I gained this year are just small links in the chain that must strengthen to encompass the world with peace. But they are links and it is a step forward. Hopefully AFS and similar pro- grams will continue until peace finally does reign, lf
