BOYS' AND GIRLS' STATE - 19 0 Tom Johnson Boys' State 1970 by Tom Johnson I was honored this past summer to attend the 1970 session of the California Boys' State held in Sacra- mento. It provided me with not only a first hand look at our state government by actually forming a similar one but, more importantly, gave me an added insight into the work, complexities, frustrations, and satis- factions that our government presents. In eight days, 850 delegates representing all the California high schools participated in every governmental procedure ranging from the appointment of a city dog catcher, to the entire process by which our governor is elected. With such a background, I find a greater sense of re- spect for our government officials and a sincere feeling of gratitude to the Boys' State sponser, the American Legion. On a final note, California Boys' State was not only a laboratory of practical political science, but a satisfying reality that 850 strangers can, in one week, attain unity and accomplish a worthwhile and rewarding goal as well. Janie Cowles Girls' State 1970 by Janie Cowles Last July, 560 girls converged on the U.C. Davis Cam- pus for eight days. I was Awalt's representative to Girls' State which was. af-practical experience in Cali- fornia State Government. The key words were involve- ment and participation. But more important than this was the enthusiasm and friendship' that resulted. All of us that first day were put into cities, counties and political parties. I was from Fremont in Kelsey County and a member of the Whig Party. I was elected City Councilman. From there we had County Elections. Our stay was high-lighted by a visit from Governor Ronald Reagan and a tour ofthe State Capitol. On Sunday night 560 friends with tear-filled eyes, left a Girls' State pledging to write each other. There is only one way I can describe the atmosphere at Girls' State. THEREARE NO STRANGERS AT GI RLS' STATE JUST FRIENDS WHO HAVEN'T MET. Thank you, Awalt and the American Legion for this fantastic experience.
