ETME EYE FI ALS We should be right near the top, replied Coach Robert Lowe, when asked about the prospects of success for his Varsity Tennis Team. The key to the Tennis Team's strength is its depth. The squad will consist of a strong group of last year's Junior Varsity players and three returning Var- sity courtmen led by Greg Norris. Though high hopes rest on Norris in league competition, the entire team is expected to do well. Other Varsity contestants are Benji Robins, John Mersan, Bob Wessel, Bruce Sommerville, and Tom Merchant. Competition in the Doubles category will be left up to Bob Thompson, Craig Elliott, Kent Russell, and Hans Boer. The nine-man Junior Varsity Tennis team should do well this season. Coach Don Thompson reports that four of his players are retuming atheletes and that the Freshmen who complement his squad all show promise. League competition will be stiff, however. Fremont, Los Altos, and Homestead will be the most formidable opponents on the Spartan calender. In spite of this, there are good odds that the team will place in the top live and might even grab the number one spot in the S.C.V.A.L. standings. SP RTANS TEE OFF K. Andrews, D. Boerner, D. Clark, S. Howell, G. Knoll, J. Maus, K. McCarthy, J. Palazzari, C. Perlov, S. Porter, D. Poppen, G. Prieur, D. Strickland, G. Woltzen. A system of continual intra-squad competition provides great incentive, reports Varsity Golf Coach Tim Young. Each team member in the top five may be challenged by another for his spot. If the challenger is successful, he is moved into the top five and thereby allowed to compete in inter- school matches. The fifteen-member Team has depth and talent. Prospects are good for one the top three slots in League standings. Among the strong players is Senior Don Clark who shoots consistently in the mid-70's. Kerry Andrews, Ken McCarthy, and Jerry Knoll are all doing well early in the season and each shows promise for continued improvement. 5. .F s., WQQNM 'A K V s t Y f X .5-W 9 1 t , Dig. ,- N , Q , ,.
