GGOD FIRST S AS FOR SOCCER Awalt's students witnessed a new sport being played on the campus this winter. The world popular game of soccer made a modest begin- ning of Awalt by attracting fifty or so spectators to most of the home games. The most exciting match proved to be the Varsity game against Sunnyvale in which both teams scored most of their goals in the last quarter and the two overtime periods to end the game inia 3-3 tie. The Varsity squad, with previous experience in the Awalt Soccer Club, managed to hold its own in the league despite the loss of two valuable players in practice games. Both Rick Coen, team captian and center for- ward, and Steve Good, goalie, suffered broken legs in pre-season practice games. The Varsity team finished its season with a 4 win, 3 loss, l tie record by edging out Los Altos 2-l in an over- time game. Exceptional players were Hasan Bilg- utay, Dirk Gallagher fhalfbacksj, Paul Hager, Art Flynn fwingsj, Roland Peter Qforwardj, Dale Guidoux fforward and fullbackj and Jeff Hughes fgoalkeeperj. The Junior Varsity squad comprised almost entirely of beginning players, showed a keen desire to learn and a remarkable spirit of cooper- ation. A strong passing attack led by team captain Bill Kefauver and inside forward Joe Wilson as- sisted by left wing Randy Haberl caused consider- able worry for even the toughest opposing de- fense. VARSITY MATME THE MOVE This Varsity Wrestling Team was probably one of the most well balanced teams in Awalt's history, reports Coach Schiffman. Led by Marty Lydster, Steve Haas, Gordon Prieur, and Pete Calvo, the team finished up with a 10-3 league record. The season was highlighted by the 25-17 victory over Los Altos.
