FRUSTRATI G SE FOR VARSITY FOOTBALL The 1970 Football season was a frustrating one for the Spar- tan Varsity Team. Anticipating a winning season the Spar- tans were hit early with key injuries which continued to plague them throughout the season. In spite ofthese handi- caps the players spirits remained high. Unable to establish a consistant offensive effort, the Spartans nevertheless con- tinued to play hard hitting football. Highlights of the sea- son included the tremendous game with Los Altos at Foot- hill College. The Spartans came from behind twice against the bigger, very touch Knights. Awalt led in the third quar- ter before finally losing to the Santa Clara County Champs 18-13. The win over highly rated Yuba City was another high point of the season. The Spartans maintained their winning tradi- tion by beating Mt.View and Wilcox to finish with a res- pectable 5-4 season record. Seniors contributed outstanding efforts throughout the sea- son were Mark Denardo, Pat Martin, Mike Yancey, Steve Haas, Doug Kneubuhl, and Bill Klamm. Although disap- pointed in the season's outcome, Coach Niebaum praised the efforts and positive attitude of the team in the face of many misfortunes and setbacks.
