WALT' FIRST FOOTB LL -is-as A ix i ., ei .L Ni The 1970 Awalt Junior Spartans posted an 8-1 overall season record and a 5-1 Santa Clara Valley Athletic League record, good enough to win a league co-championship. Even though their record was 2-0, the JVs were still wondering just how good they were as they took the field at 6:00, October 3 against their first tough foe, Yuba City. By 7:30 they had their answer--they were very good. Led by an awesome offense which was to average 26 points per game and a quick thinking and hard hitting de- fense which was to yield only 8 points per game, the JVs demolished Yuba City 40-8, roaring back from an 8-8 first quarter tie. From there on the two undefeated grid powers of the JV National Divi- sion, Awalt and Los Altos, played winning football and waited for each other. On Oct. 23 the two undefeated powerhouses collided on the Los 100 Altos field. In a game marked by the Junior Spartan's opportunistic defensive play, Awalt rallied from an 8-0 defecit to defeat their arch-rivals 22-14. Injuries, mud, and a fateful punt retum spelled the end of the J Vs' hopes for an undefeated season as Peter- son beat them 7-6. But on the two succeeding weeks, the JVs came back to preserve their share of the title by downing Mt. View and Wilcox.
