SENIOR HISTORY Avon has changed a great deal rn srx years as has the Class of 1960 At graduatron there were but two left of those who began as first formers Pete Van Wrnkle and james Wardrop How we laughed at therr storres concernrng the Good Old Days It seems that the war cry of Elephant then was Ham and Eggs and a srde order of buttered toast And there was Mr Dunn who once mrstook study hall for a baseball dramond and a coffee pot for a baseball Rrsrng to the ranks of the second form Pete and james were jorned by an assortment of gremlrns There was a grant from West Hartford and a candy man from New Haven as well as a walkrng drctronary from New York The greater part of therr frantrc pranks were legalrzed under the ausprces of the Marchrng and Chowder Socrety Thrs organrzatron was ably drrected and counselled by Mr Haase and Mrs Haase' Monrtors' The Class of 60 expanded greatly durrng 1956 1957 Calrfornra rnvaded our ranks There was a red headed nrnety seven pounder desrrned to become Wardcn along wrth a mop of curly harr and Steve drscovered shavrng cream From thc sunny south came pebble and a myrrad of motorcycle storres And the fourth member of the Krngston Trro arrrved laden down wrth a gurtar and bongos Then there was a small Gloucester fisherman who sported a huge wrndsor knot We met Mr Efinger for the frrst trme Ned and Trm were our prrze Englrsh students No one can say that the thrrd form of that year drdnt take an rnterest rn athletrcs On the grrdrron there was the Manhasset Flash whrlc a certarn personalrty played a fiery brand of basketball It was a successful year all the way round and some srgns of buddrng leadershrp and mfrturrty were to be seen Insprred by a dark figure rn a tweed surt the Class of 1960 now fourth formers reached new herghts Nebraska sent us a young man of no small amount of popularrty as drd the Englewood School for Boys From the Mrdwest came a dark harred boy of menacrng ap pearance yet underneath he was as gentle as could be And Chref Somethrng or Other showed Sandy a few thrngs about roundball There was ohn how d ya spell hrs last name and a erseyrte who startled us wrth hrs oral feats Cole jorned the Glee Club and Demo gave Mr Grove headaches wrth hrs exotrc brand of jungle jazz Mrller and Escher emerged from the woods lust long enough to say hello The form was lrkewrse emerg rng from the depths but we drdnt plan to return We were on our way It rs rntcrcstrng to note thc comparatrvely short per rod of trme wherern the transrtron from boyhood to manhood rs reached A ganglrng boy becomes a con fident young man seemrngly overnrght Thus other resrdents of Avon were taken aback to say the least on vrewrng the Class of 60 as fifth formers Our ranks were once agarn augmented standouts were a jour nalrst of sorts who accompanred by a woodsman came to us from Baltrmore There was that laughrng red head and the rncapacrtated West Vrrgrnran And what about those local boys? That drummer that swrft mrler and that busrnessman' It goes wrthout sayrng we were all hrghly amused by the antrcs and contortrons of that drmrnutrve scamp Our form led the school rn numer ous ways athletrcally scholastrcally and rn actrvrtres to boot We re Senrors' They sard wed never make rt but we showed people rust how wrong they can be eh? That red head emerged as Warden and that drctronary as Presrdent judge Avon s leadrng woodsman demon strated hrs lournalrstrc talents rn more ways than one Of course he recerved some help from Roy and Sandy A brg Irrshman and a lrttle ltalran led the way for Avons Varsrty Eleven l 2 3 rn Advanced Math and Steve s cartoon corner rn physrcs We carrred off the Boar s Head admrrably and some lrttle rmp was the pester or haven t you heard? It was srx years filled wrth laughter sorrow rowdmess tears achrevements and farlures a srx years that are a part of us and a part of Avon Thrs book rs our restrmonral and graduatron rs our reward As we leave Avon we look back on rt all wrth mrxed emotrons We wrll remember Prerp hrs car and hrs never ceasrng desrre to make us men Doc and hrs dry humor as well as those rntermrnable lectures Coffee at Pops Mr johnson and hrs accursed slrps Mr Loveland and hrs rnsprrrng us wrth a love of the past and a respect for our herrtage Hfrmmons and hrs tres and tweeds Mr Gunther and hrs acute rntellecr The General and all that he stood for Mr Efinger and hrs constructrve crrtr crsm The Dean and Durph and therr well wrshrng Mr Grove for hrs patrence Mr Tongue and Mr Burt for therr warm southern arrs Coach and the drrve and farr play he rnstrlled rn us The Colonel and hrs regrmentatron Mr Saxby and hrs edrficatron they re all a part of us now We carry off a part of Avon wrth us and a part of us remarns It rs our hope that that whrch lrngers wrthrn these walls wrll be pre served that we may return and pay our respects rn the years to come THE CLASS OF 1960 1 . , .
